    Joseph Fleming and his siblings

Joseph Fleming's parents, Richard Fleming and Henrietta Masom, married in Lambeth in 1842
In 1851 the following children are listed:
    Henrietta aged 6 born Shoreditch
    Sarah aged 2 born Shoreditch
In 1861 the list is as follows:
    William aged 5 born Shoreditch
    Jane aged 4 born Shoreditch
Joseph aged 2 born Bethnal Green
    and in 1871:
    Jane aged 14 born Hoxton
Joseph aged 12 born Bethnal Green
Mary Ann aged 8 born Bethnal Green
Jessie aged 3 born Bethnal Green
    In 1881:
Mary Ann aged 19 born Bethnal Green
Jessie aged 13 born Bethnal Green
    In 1891:
Jessie aged 23 born Bethnal Green
    In 1901:
Jessie aged 33 born Bethnal Green
In that year there is also listed a grand-daughter of Henrietta Fleming snr. as follows:
Henrietta Finch aged 25 (Widow) born Bethnal Green

The birth records for these children, in order, run as follows:
    Name: Henrietta Fleming
    Year of Registration: 1845
    Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
    District: Shoreditch
    County: London, Middlesex

    Name: Sarah Ann Fleming
    Year of Registration: 1849
    Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
    District: Shoreditch
    County: London, Middlesex

    Name: William Alexander Fleming
    Year of Registration: 1855
    Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
    District: Shoreditch
    County: London, Middlesex

    Name: Emily Jane Fleming
    Year of Registration: 1856
    Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
    District: Shoreditch
    County: London, Middlesex

    Name: Joseph Fleming
    Year of Registration: 1859
    Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
    District: Bethnal Green
    County: Greater London, London, Middlesex

    Name: Mary Ann Fleming
    Year of Registration: 1862
    Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
    District: Bethnal Green
    County: Greater London, London, Middlesex

    Name: Jessie Fleming
    Year of Registration: 1868
    Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
    District: Bethnal Green
    County: Greater London, London, Middlesex

To take these children, again in order,:
    1) Henrietta (born 1845) is listed in 1851 as a 6 year old living with her parents, but not listed thereafter with her family. I can find no listing under the name of Henrietta Fleming in the 1861 census. In fact her death is listed in Shoreditch in 1854.
    Name: Henrietta Flemming
    Year of Registration: 1854
    Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
    District: Shoreditch
    County: London, Middlesex
She would have been 9 years old

    2) Sarah Ann Fleming (born 1849) is listed with her parents as 2 year old in 1851 but not listed thereafter. In fact she died shortly after the 1851 census as follows:
    Name: Sarah Ann Fleming
    Year of Registration: 1851
    Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
    District: Shoreditch
    County: London, Middlesex

    3) William Fleming (born 1855), the oldest son, is listed in 1861 with his family but not thereafter. By 1861 the family had moved from Shoreditch to Bethnal Green, and so it is in that district we would expect William's death to registered if he died young. There is a death of a William Fleming registered in Bethnal Green in 1861, but it is in the quarter before the census. In fact, William did survive and marry - see below

    4) The Jane Fleming listed in 1861 and 1871 was actually born Emily Jane in 1856. She married in 1878 as follows:
    Name: Emily Jane Fleming
    Year of Registration: 1878
    Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
    District: Hackney
    County: Greater London, London, Middlesex
Her husband is listed as either Charles Drake or Robert Dawson Morley, the other female on the index page being Elizabeth Bliss. Looking at the 1881 enables us to find out that Emily married Robert Morley. The couple are listed in that year as follows:
    303 Globe Road, Bethnal Green
Head: Robert Morley aged 32 born Hackney - Bricklayer
Wife: Emily Morley aged 24 born Shoreditch - Machinist
    Child:
Emily aged 1 month born Bethnal Green
An infant son named Robert Dawson Morley was born and died in 1880
In 1901 the couple are listed:
    27 York Road, St Luke's
Head: Robert D Moreley (sic) aged 42 born Hackney - Bricklayer
Wife: Emily J Moreley aged 34 born Shoreditch
    Children:
Jessie aged 8 born Bethnal Green
    Arthur W aged 2 born St Luke's
    Henrietta C aged 1 born St Luke's
The couple are listed in 1901 as follows:
    231 Chatham Avenue, Shoreditch
Head: Robert D Morley aged 52 born Hackney - Bricklayer
Wife: Emily J Morley aged 44 born Bethnal Green - Brace machinist
    Children:
Jessie G aged 18 born Bethnal Green - Machinist
    Arthur W aged 12 born St Luke's
Florence E aged 8 born Shoreditch
In this same year Henrietta Fleming is listed living at 220 Chatham Avenue
The record below is possible that of Emily's death:
    Name: Emily Morley
    Estimated Birth Year: abt 1856
    Year of Registration: 1915
    Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
    Age at Death: 59
    District: St Giles
    County: London, Middlesex

    5) is Joseph Fleming himself, born 1859

    6) Mary Ann Fleming, born 1862, is listed living with her family in 1871 and 1881. She is not listed in 1891 under her birth name, and so probably married or had died by that time. There is no record of an appropriate death.
There are a number of possible marriages:
    1883 - Lambeth:
    Louisa Adkins
    Mary Ann Fleming
    Walter George
    Alfred Saunders
    1888 - London City
    Caroline Sophie Farthing
    Mary Ann Fleming
    Joseph King
    Mary Ann Lincoln
    Uriah Burse Siggers
    Walter Samuel Spooner
    From 1891 census, we find:
    Uriah Siggers married Caroline Farthing
Walter Spooner's is listed as Mary A but she is listed as 34 years old and born in Rotherhithe - Mary Ann Fleming at this time would have been about 29 years old
Mary Ann Fleming must have married Joseph King, but none of the possible candidates match her in age and birthplace
    1889 - Stepney
    Elizabeth Bennett
    John Jesse Bucknell
    Arthur Crispin
    Mary Ann Fleming
This Mary Ann Fleming married Arthur Crispin, but in 1891 she is listed as 23 years of age and born in Stepney

    7) Jessie Fleming, born 1868, is listed as still unmarried and living with her mother until the last currently available census (1901). At that stage the two women were living at 220 Chatham Avenue, Shoreditch, and Jessie is listed as a 33 year old brace machinist.

Also living with them is the mysterious 25 year old granddaughter named Henrietta Finch. As this woman is listed as widowed, Finch was obviously not her maiden name. She must have been the married daughter of one of Henrietta's children, but which one is not immediately apparent. This Henrietta is listed as born in Bethnal Green and would have been born circa 1876.
There was the following birth which may be relevant:
    Name: Henrietta Fleming
    Year of Registration: 1876
    Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
    District: Bethnal Green
    County: Greater London, London, Middlesex
When we look forward to the 1881 census, we not only find this Henrietta but this clears up the mystery of what happened to William (child No 3). This confusion arose because of a variant spelling of the surname
In 1881 the family is listed as follows:
    36 Robinson Street, Bethnal Green
Head: William Flemming aged 26 born Shoreditch - Draper's packer
Wife: Fanny Flemming aged 29 born Woolwich
    Children:
Henrietta aged 5 born Bethnal Green
    William aged 2
The William who was Joseph's brother was born in 1855, making his age and place of birth in the 1881 listing an exact fit. Why he alone of the family should be listed under the spelling Flemming is a unknown.
Even with this information I have not been able to find William in the 1871 census. As Henrietta was born in 1876 and was the older child, it is likely that the couple married shortly before that date. We find that William Fleming (note original spelling) married in 1875 as follows:
    Name: William Fleming
    Year of Registration: 1875
    Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
    District: Bethnal Green
    County: Greater London, London, Middlesex
His wife is listed as Fanny Rickson, who in 1871 is listed as a servant at the Coach and Horses public house at 81 Holborn.
In 1891 William and his family are listed as follows:
332 Bartholomew Buildings, Old Street, Finsbury
Head: William Flemming aged 37 born Shoreditch - General labourer
Wife: Fanny Flemming aged 40 born Woolwich
    Children:
Henrietta aged 15 born Bethnal Green
William aged 11 born Mile End
    Rose aged 7 born Hackney
So William's daughter, Henrietta, must have married at some stage between 1891 and 1901. We also know from the 1901 census that her married name was Finch.
In 1895 the following listing was found:
    Name: Henrietta Fanny Fleming
    Year of Registration: 1895
    Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
    District: Holborn
    County: London, Middlesex
Her husband's name is listed as Frederick George Finch, whose death is listed as follows:
    Name: Frederick George Finch
    Estimated Birth Year: abt 1862
    Year of Registration: 1898
    Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
    Age at Death: 36
    District: London City
    County: Greater London, London, Middlesex
Frederick Finch is listed in 1891 as a barman at the Golden Anchor public house, 16 Evelina Street, Camberwell

That is as far as I have got. The questions I am still trying to answer are:
    1) When and to whom did Mary Ann Fleming get married?
    2) Where was William Fleming in 1871?
    3) Did Jessie Fleming marry after the 1901 census?

I contacted the descendant who compiled the page, but have not received a reply as yet. If all information contained therein is correct, then the above represents a promising genealogical lead. Note that Richard Fleming and Henrietta Mason are mentioned.

      Best regards,
