    Andy,

You can read about the "Kennyites" and the "Hallinanites" by clicking on this link. (Bottom of page, "There were two factions...", and continuing on the next page.)

      Thanks Gareth,

I had also found that reference and scanned it briefly, hence my comment about Ireland. But it didnt' make a lot of sense to me because I lack context.

It refers to one of the houses of Winchester College:

Thank you, Chris. That makes more sense in this context.

Kenny's (or "Kennaez") was the informal name for Fearson's (boarding house). Now, I wonder who would at been at Fearson's in the 1890's.... Do we know at which boarding house Montague stayed? Offhand, I do not.

Update: 1 Compton Road is a very short distance from the present location of Fearson's (Kenny's). It looks to be about 200 meters.

Sorry to keep chiming in here but Chris Scott if you are out there, can you find Edwin N. Harvey (aged 6 years) probably lving at Parkstone in 1881?

There is an Edwin Percy Harvey whose birth is registered at Poole in fourth quarter 1874. This would make him 16 at the time the census was taken in 1891.

Right first and last names, right age, Parkstone is right next to Poole. This sounds like the right person though I can't explain the middle initial of "Edwin N. Harvey." Perhaps he had more than one middle name.

It was indeed Edwin Percy Harvey who was at Winchester in 1891. I'm not sure if or how he is related to Montague's mother. Edwin Percy was born at Parkstone on 25 May 1874 to Francis Edward and Maria (nee Cookson) Harvey. If there is a familial connection to Ann Harvey Druittt it is apparently a distant one.

I am sorry about all these separate posts. I keep just missing the 30 minute cutoff for editing.

Montague Druitt was a boarder at" Fearon's House"

                      Hello Andy etAl,

According to D.J.Leighton's book "Montague Druitt: Portrait of a Contender" ( Hydrangea Publishing: London:2005 ), at page 25, it says:
"When Montague set off to Winchester College in January, 1870 he did so as a fee paying pupil and entered Fearons, the house named after William Fearon, a housemaster who later became Headmaster."
( " After two terms Montague did achieve a scholarship, coming third amongst all scholars, and this relieved his father of paying his fees. He had been identified as one of the brightest boys, and by-passed the junior part of the school to enter College in the middle section. He progressed very well and achieved the status of being taught by the Headmaster, Dr George Ridding for the last three years.." ).
Note: the name is "Fearons" not " Fearson ". JOHN RUFFELS.

Thank you, Joohn, I stand corrected on the name. It is indeed Fearon (without the "s"). I guess I read that in Leighton but at the time it meant nothing to me.

Looking at this modern map http://www.winchestercollege.co.uk/D...oll%20site.pdf it would appear that Edwin Harvey lived at what is now Turner's (or "Hopper's"). Of course, he might have given information to a Kennyite. But I hasten to add that this Harvey does not appear to be a close relative of Ann Harvey Druitt, though I can't tell for certain yet.

                          Another Contemporaneous Harvey.

                          Thanks Andy,
I can find no "Harvey" at New College around the 1870 mark, which would have made him a contemporary of Montague Druitt.
However, I did find a "Robert R. Harvey" who attended Winchester College in the Common Term of 1869. The year before MJD.
Of course, it is a fairly common name. Montague's Harvey relatives appear to be basically Shapwick farmers. Though they could have been comfortably off enough to send their son(s) to a good school.
Another possible distant family relative could have been the "Robert P. Horsley" mentioned by you previously as having received a Second Class pass in Classical Moderns.(You will recall he was listed in that article showing the Exam Results).
He is listed in my notes as having graduated 2Cl Mod in 1878 and 2 Cl Mod in 1880. One member married into the Mayo family who married into the Druitt's family.
In fact, James Druitt senior married, as his second wife, Matilda Jane Mayo. She was the sister of one, John Horsley Mayo who later travelled to Australia and met with Archdeacon Thomas Druitt. So, lots of minor links. Possibly may become important later.
                          JOHN RUFFELS.

Hi all, whilst looking in the old trade directories here in Hull recently I did find some Farquharson family members residing here.
It is probably not them but all the same, next time I am in I will make a note of what they were upto.
It was about the 1840's possibly earlier.
Sorry its a bot vague, but I was working on a project and looked at every trade directory from 1794 to 1925!
                            Regards Mike

John, the quote cited by Farson referenced someone who was at Winchester in the nineties. We should therefore not be looking for contemporaries of Montague so much as those who were enrolled at Winchester in the 1890's. That's why I searched the 1891 census in the FreeCen database for male residents of Winchester who were born in Dorset between 1875 and 1885, i.e. school-aged boys. Of course, it wouldn't have to be someone who was born in Dorset. Or it could be somebody who came to Winchester after 1891 but still in the 1890's.

The name "Harvey" jumped out at me but we really need to go over the above list very carefully.

While in Winchester I hope at least to see if perhaps the public library has back issues of the Winchester periodical as I would like to read the entire 1972 article. I understand the college is not open to visitors.

Mike, I'll be interested to know if you find anything.

I am surprised no one has picked up on me find regarding Farquharson's plan of standing for MP from Bethnal Green. I think that is potentially very highly significant but I don't know how to go about investigating it any further.
