  • A Liberal Druitt at West Ham

Anyone know who this Druitt may be? I do know the area, which is coincidentally where three of the victims lie buried. Would this be our friend Jabez Druitt? I know he was a "monumental mason" who had a shop in this area. Jabez was in correspondence with Montague's cousin Gertrude in 1888 but it is not known whether they were related.

There is a Theodore Druitt listed in Forest Gate, West Ham in the 1896 Kellys Trade Directory http://tinyurl.com/8opfm2 . Maybe the same individual founded Theodore Druitt & Co., High Street, Stratford (c. 1862– 1926) refered to on this site under 'Building Materials' ?

You know more about this family than I....

      SERIOUS CORRECTION:

The above clipping is from 1886 not 1866. Sorry for the typo!

I'll have to do some checking but I think Theodore may have been related to Jabez.

As I suspected, I have "met" Theodore Druitt before!

Andy, I think you are right that Jabez was Theodore's uncle. Here are the family in 1841. The younger Thomas is Theodore's father.

Thanks, Robert. That's as I thought then. We don't know whether Jabez was related to Montague's family. If there was a relationship it must have been rather distant because the correspondence between Montague's cousin Gertrude and Jabez surrounds just this issue. Gertrude is doing genealogical research and contacting all the Druitts she can find. She and Jabez are trying to establish a tie but the correspondence ends before we know if there is one.

                Hi Andy

Ancestry is playing up something rotten at the moment, but as far as I can gather Theodore died January 1939 about 10 minutes walk from me (not that I was here in 1939!) and the month before a Theodore Russell Druitt b. 1885, of the same address and obviously a relative, died too. There may be an obit in the local newspaper though of course it won't clarify anything regarding Monty.
