William Harvey Druitt and the Girl from Whitechapel

I did post a bit of info about this on the old boards but I have done some more work since.
In 1891 William Harvey Druitt was listed as follows:
    Montgomery, Herley Road, Holdenhurst, hampshire
Head: William H Druitt aged 34 born Wimborne - Solicitor
    Servants:
Jane Peckham aged 30 born Ringwood, Hants - Cook
Eliza J Whiteman aged 15 born Whitechapel - Parlour maid

Both members of his domestic were obviously very satisfactory as they were both still with him at the time of the 1901 census, albeit at a different address:
    Westdale, Cambridge Road, Bournemouth
Head: William Harvey Druitt aged 44 born Wimborne - Solicitor
    Servants:
Jane Peckham aged 40 born Ringwood - Cook
Eliza J Whiteman aged 26 born Whitechapel - Housemaid

These two women, Jane Peckham and Eliza Jane Whiteman were related. Jane Peckham was either Eliza's mother or aunt. I deduced this as follows. In 1881, the very young Eliza Whiteman is listed in the Peckham household:
    Kings Arms Lane, Ringwood, Hampshire
Head: Eliza Peckham aged 56 born Southampton
    Children:
Walter aged 23 born Ringwood - Bricklayer
Edward aged 21 born Ringwood - Dealer in vegetables
George aged 18 born Ringwood - Dealer in vegetables
Henry aged 15 born Ringwood - Errand Boy
Grand-daughter: Eliza J Whiteman aged 5 born London
In 1881 Jane Peckham was a servant in the household of Frank Wareham, a butcher, at 106 Commercial Road, Holdenhurst, Hants

That Jane Peckham was a daughter of this Eliza Peckham can be shown from the 1871 census:
    Kings Arms Lane, Ringwood
Head: Daniel Peckham aged 49 born Ripley, Hants - Labourer
Wife: Eliza Peckham aged 47 born Millbrook, Hants
    Children:
Charles aged 20 born Southampton - Shoeing smith
Edward aged 18 born Southampton - Tailor
    Walter aged 14
    Jane aged 10
    George aged 8
    Henry aged 5
    Ann aged 3
All five above born in Ringwood

The birth of Eliza Whiteman was registered as follows:
    Eliza Jane Whiteman
    1875 Quarter 4
    St George in the East

For Eliza Whiteman to be Eliza Peckham's grand-daughter, as listed in 1881, there are only a limited number of possibilities.
    1) Jane Peckham was the mother. At the time of Eliza Whiteman's birth Jane would have been 15 or 16 years old. She had a younger sister, Ann, but she could not possible have been the mother, being herself only 3 years old in 1871. If Jane Peckham was the mother, and the father was named Whiteman, I can find no trace of a marriage.
    2) One of Eliza's sons fathered the child, but if so where did the name Whiteman come from?

I will be sending for the birth certificate and it will interesting to see her parentage. It would be interesting to know when she left Whitechapel and what she told William Druitt of the area.

      Hi HR
      many thanks for the message
I have not posted yet in that I am still researching this point
There is a possibility that Jane Peckham had an older sister who had married and left home by the time of the 1881 census and it is that issue I am trying to clarify
      Hope to be posting soon
      Regards
      Chris

        Peckham Family

        1861:
        4 Wellington Place, Ringwood, Hants
Head: Daniel Peckham aged 34 born Ripley - Receiving parochial relief
Wife: Eliza Peckham aged 33 born Hythe, Hants
        Children:
        Julia aged 12 born Southampton
        Charles aged 10 born Southampton
        Edward aged 8 born Brighton
        Sarah aged 6 born Southampton
        Walter aged 4 born Ringwood
        Jane aged 1 born Ringwood

This shows that Jane Peckham had two older sisters, Julia (born circa 1849) and Sarah (born circa 1855)
Neither of these girls is listed with the family in the 1871 census
The death of a Sarah Peckham in the appropriate area is listed for 1863, but no trace for the period 1861 to 1871 for a Julia Peckham

The nearest to a birth record for Julia Peckham is a Julia Emily Peckham whose birth was registered in Lymington, Hampshire, in 1846. However, this young lady would have been 15, not 12, at the time of the 1861 census. Age is not a definitive guideline, however, as examination of the ages listed for other family members from one census to another will show. As an example, Daniel Peckham is listed in 1861 as 34 years of age, but in 1871 he is listed as 49.

This Julia Emily Peckham married in Lymingon in 1874. However there is no mention of a potential spouse named Whiteman. She married either William Browning or William Hopkins.

However, it turned out that Julia Peckham was a false lead, and the daughter in question was Sarah Peckham, born 1855. In the July to September quarter of 1875, when Sarah would have been 20 years of age, the following marriage is listed:
        Bethnal Green:
        Sarah Peckham married Charles Whiteman

By 1891 Sarah would have been aged circa 35 and we know she was born in Southampton. This fits with the family listed below:
23 Lucas Street, St George in the East
Head: Charles Whiteman aged 48 born Sussex - General labourer
Wife: Sarah Whiteman aged 35 born Southampton
        Children:
Harriet aged 13 born St George East
Charles aged 11 born Mile End
        George aged 8 born Stratford
Mabel aged 4 born St Georges
Arthur aged 2 born St Georges
Sydney aged 1 born St Georges

In 1881 the family is listed under a variant spelling of the surname:
39 Lucas Street, St George East
Head: Charles Wightman aged 39 born Pyecombe, Sussex - General labourer
Wife: Sarah Wightman aged 26 born Southampton
        Children:
Harriet F aged 3 born St Georges
Charles E aged 2 born Mile End
Louisa aged 3 weeks born St Georges

In the last record we have of the family, the 1901 census, Sarah is not listed with the family in London, but her husband is listed as married, not widowed.
29 Lucas Street, St George East
Head: Charles Whiteman aged 59 born Sussex - Labourer
        Children:
Charles aged 22 born St Georges - Labourer
George aged 18 born Stratford - Labourer
        Arthur aged 12
        Sidney aged 10
        Harriet aged 23
        Mabel aged 14
        Caroline aged 8
        Dorothy aged 6
Sarah is listed living with her brother in Ringwood in 1901:
        Kings Arms Lane, Ringwood
Head: Edward Peckham aged 46 born Ringwood - Postman
Mother: Eliza Peckham aged 75 born Hythe
Sister: Sarah Whiteman aged 44 born Ringwood
Nephew: Walter Whiteman aged 1 born St George East

I think it is beyond doubt that the family outlined above was that of the Eliza Jane Whiteman but how this girl and her aunt came to work for Montagu Druitt's brother remains, of course, unknown.

            awesome Chris...

I have been on these boards for a fairly short time only, but your work is invaluable as far as I can tell...keep going...

good that you found the link to the name "Whiteman", otherwise it might have been the woman deliberately changed her name for some reason as I'm sure many a woman did during that time. Mary Jane Kelly comes to mind as a possible example...
In heaven I am a wild ox
On earth I am a lion
A jester from hell and shadows almighty
            The scientist of darkness
            Older than the constellations

              Hi Chris,

"I think it is beyond doubt that the family outlined above was that of the Eliza Jane Whiteman but how this girl and her aunt came to work for Montagu Druitt's brother remains, of course, unknown."

I would guess that the aunt having local connections may have been a factor, Ringwood being only a few miles from both Christchurch and Wimbourne.
