Bury appears to be the one who instigated the idea that he could have been the Ripper; by declaring he was worried he may have been seen as the Ripper.

When we add into the mix the idea that Bury was arrogant enough to believe he would be acquitted for his wife's murder, then it becomes a means of Bury seeking public recognition by shining a light on himself.

A bit like if someone tells you to not think of an elephant...then what happens?

    You think of an elephant.

Therefore, Bury deliberately wanted people to think he MAY HAVE BEEN the Ripper, but not make it too obvious.

That may explain why he didn't cut his wife's throat, because he didn't want people to KNOW he was the Ripper, because then he would lose power and control by being convicted as the Ripper.
In order to retain control, he simply teases and taunts indirectly because he wants the attention, but at the same time it counts for nothing if he is found out to be the Ripper, because he loses his freedom.

By playing the "I could be the Ripper' card, he his stalling for time in the hope that the murder of his wife becomes secondary.
But when Bury called their bluff, the police didn't buy it and chose not to interview him.

His attempt to use reverse psychology failed and then when he was then found guilty and sentenced to hang for his wife's murder, he perhaps realised he had failed.

It would be interesting to note that once he realised there would be no reprieve, whether or not the whispers of him being the Ripper died down.

There's also a possibility that the police did think he was the Ripper, but rather than stalling they chose to just let him hang and by doing so, silenced him.

By not giving him any attention or focus as the potential Ripper, perhaps the police deliberately chose to bite the bullet and just let him fade into the obscurity he deserved.

Sometimes the action of taking no action is the wisest strategy; a psychological war of attrition so to speak.

Did the police let Bury hang because they wanted the sorry of the Ripper to die with him?
