Location of St. John's Charity School

Catherine Eddowes, and later Frances Coles, attended St. John’s Charity School. It was supposedly located on Tooley St. at Potters Fields. The building at that site bears a plaque stating that it was the former site of the St. Olave’s grammar school. It makes no mention of St. John's Charity School. St. John’s was a girls’ school for the poor of St. John’s parish while St. Olaves was a boys’ school.

Were the two schools housed in the same building?

The Girls' Charity School was located on the northwest corner of Tooley Street and Potters' Fields, whereas St. Olave's Grammar School was situated on the northeast corner of the same intersection: Queen Elizabeth Street (from Tooley Street) and Potters' Fields.

From 1836, the Girls' Charity School would have belonged to St. Olave Poor Law Union:

- St. Olave
- St. Thomas
- St. John Horselydown
- St. Mary Magdalen Bermondsey (from 1869)
- St. Mary Rotherhithe (from 1869)

... but the designation "St. John's" may have remained intact.
