  • Mitre Sq redevelopement

    Hi All,
Took a stroll through Mitre Sq today just to see what was being done to it.
All I found was the square boarded off.
In a way it helped me use my imagination to picture the old buildings from the time built around it. It also put into scale just how small and tight the square was.
I only hope when finished, it doesnt completely look un- recognisable.

ps. took some photos, just cant work out how to put them on here.

Check out the thread how to attach an image in Pub Talk I think.

I'm going to be in London in a couple of weeks and have set aside some time to give my traveling companion a brief Ripper tour, with Mitre Square on the list. Is it possible at present to get to the actual murder site?

Yes Kensei , it is only the surrounding buildings that have gone .. funny thing is , I was there a couple of weeks back .. and for some bizarre reason, sitting at the murder spot, you can actually get a better perspective of how small and tight the Square actually was back in the day .. I have been countless times before , but only on that last trip , with no buildings to give you a false visual could I actually feel how small and tight Mitre Sq would have been back in the day .. I would urge other Ripperologists to check it out .. it really is something odd .

I recently found myself in Mitre Square and it looked completely different from when I was last there. I agree, it looks a lot smaller now all the surrounding buildings have been pulled down.
I do hope that any new development doesn't swallow the square up and make it inaccessible.

            Hi Milpool,

            Welcome to Casebook!

Are you able to post a photograph of Mitre Square as it is now? (I haven't seen it since 2011.)
I won't always agree but I'll try not to be disagreeable.

Wished I'd have seen this thread, before my visit on the 12th - 13th of this month.

There's very little you can see at the moment. The corner or Mitre Square (that we're interested in) being the only place.... there's just enough of the square accessible to see, but I found it hard to imagine what it was like back in the day.

I wonder where they end the Ripper tours now then?

                  Last visit to Mitre sq.

Yes, I was there recently and it is quite spooky, looks very small but, having knocked everything around it down, they have ruined the feel of the place, it will be glass and steel all around when done, most people walk through what is left and don't know what happened here. All of the murder site will soon be completely rubbed out and it seems as if it's being done on purpose as the Bucks row site is also being "done over" right now too!

                    G'day Robert

suspect that 99%+ of those who passed by pre-the "redevelopment" had any idea what had happened there.

And surely you aren't trying to suggest that it is conspiracy.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying, why now and why in these places when there are plenty of non - descript places to develop in the East End? No sense of history anymore, It was a lovely sq before they started knocking it down, now it will be full of city ponces sipping pimm's no.1!

And plans are afoot to remove all trace of Dorset Street, as well as a huge chunk of the little that is left of old Norton Folgate.

Blimey, at this rate Ripper tour guides will soon have to get proper jobs.
