Photos of Hanbury Street and Mitre Square

The link below (found by Nemo in the light of an image I posted) has some 1970s images of Hanbury Street and Mitre Square I had not seen before

    Thanks Chris/Nemo

Interesting on several levels...Nostalgia-wise the Ford Corsair got me where it counts 'cos my first wife and I had one of those back in the late seventies/early eighties!

    All the best

Wow, Mitre Square doesn't look as big as I had envisioned. I suspect that those of us who have never been to London cognitively build up these places to quasi-pilgrimage status, only to discover that the murder scene is just another alley, just another parking garage, etc. I've been saving money to visit for the first time but sometimes I wonder if that will just continue to destroy the strange romance associated with this subject.

Spyglass: the photos are of the southwest corner of Mitre Square where Eddowes was murdered. The houses that lined Mitre Street, #s 5-9, have been torn down. In the photos, their former location is marked by the enclosure that is brick in the back and wood in the front (facing Mitre Street). Eddowes was killed behind #8, roughly the space between the noses of the white car and the black car opposite to it.

#4 Mitre Street, R.M. Curtis, looks like an interesting old building. It was probably there during Jack's day.

              Hi All,

Eddowes was allegedly found in the south-east corner of Mitre Square.

However, Reynolds News, 30th September 1888, reported that, "The body was found huddled in the middle of the square . . ."

              Regards,

              Simon

You're right it is the southeast corner. As the square isn't perfectly parallel to the equator, I must have rotated it in the wrong direction. I'll correct my post.

ETA: Darn... too late to edit. Can the mods correct old posts???

Iīve been to Mitre Square many a time, and the part of it visible on the first pic is not the whole square. It IS small - but not THAT small! The second pic also only shows part of the square, but it gives a little less crammed view. Third picture, same thing.
You really need to look at pictures covering the whole square, more or less, to grasp the true size of Mitre Square.

                  All the best,
                  Fisherman

Yeah, just a smallish one would suit me well. Got lots of things to do today. Do I get the last word or do you want it?

However, Simon, Reynolds News had got its knickers in a twist.

Good question... how about you get the last word and I get a final storming off indignantly show? Of course I'll come back on a day later. Sound fair?

Yeah, that sounds like a very fair deal to me. Actually, if I do get the final word, how about you get to storm off indignantly PLUS you can throw in a few bitter words on how Iīve changed my mind on Stride...?

I mean, I donīt wanna be unreasonable here!

I do sarcasm better than bitter, but I'll give it a shot
