  • East Side of Berner St?

From the map posted, it appears that most of the 'hapnings' occurred on the west side of Berner ST. Do we know what was on the EAST side? From the map, I'm assuming residences/shops of the Packer sort, but I'm hardly an expert.

Side note: I'm still somewhat puzzled by the occasional mention of TWO railway arches (Schwartz account)- where are the two being confused?

    Hello C.F.

For some reason, all the "shops" seem to be on the "Club" side of the street. Numbers, 2, 40 (the club), 44, 46, 48, 68, 70, 74 and 82. Some of the residences also had rooms that tailors worked in.

Apart from the Board School, which ran from just past Mrs Mortimer's (opposite number 34) down to Fairclough Street, the other side of the street, was just housing. Although, some of those residences also contained tailors rooms, numbers, 9, 11, 31, 51, 63, 65, 67 and 73, cited in Booth's diaries.

On top of that, Berner Street was a well known, room letting area,
"..where the window bills, written in Hebrew characters. inform you that there are 'loshing' (lodging) or a 'bek-rum' (back room) to let."
    according to one London newspaper.

If you "Google maps" the area, you'll see the railway arches, they are a bit further down, just past Pinchin Street.
