Are there any photos of the 10 Bells Pub circa 1888?

Thanks Observer. I wonder why the Wiki entry said that the exterior of the pub has been rebuilt since JtR. It looks the same to me --same pillars, details, etc.

That photo is from about 1905. There is a drawing from 1888 which looks a bit different from that photo so it's possible there was some alterations/rebuilding done.

An interesting picture of congestion on Commercial Street.
            All those carts.

And not a Ripper suspect or working gas lamp in sight.

Is that the one they called Ringers? I see why now, it was the landlords name...

                  Beer House

Wasn't the Britannia (Licensee Mrs Matilda Ringer) the one known as Ringers?

                  All the best

Rob: Where is the 1888 drawing? Is it anywhere online?

                      Second post on this thread.

Discussion for general Whitechapel geography, mapping and routes the killer might have taken. Also the place for general census information and "what was it like in Whitechapel" discussions.

Many thanks Rob. You're right that it has changed.

After reading the thread, I agree with the poster who suggested that the artist might have accidentally reversed the sides of the building. In the sketch, the south facing wall has three columns of windows and the west side has only two. In real life, it is the reverse. Hopefully it is still the same structure as 1888 but with a few modifications.

                          Hi Drummond

Me too. I think the door has been moved from the side of the building to the corner, they seemed to have taken a corner off the building to achieve this, and a fancy bit has been added added to conceal the roof. Apart from that I think the building retains much of the original features. If you look at the sketch upper left of building there's only a short piece of cornice, I wonder if the rest of the cornice had fallen, or perhaps the artist just couldn't be bothered to draw it in.
