Does anybody know what was there before it became the socialist's club?
As the building was very old, it must have served many purposes.
I searched Casebook as well as the net, but got no helpful results.

Yes, it as a private residence before the club purchased it in 1885.

To add to Toms comments, it was also the site of a business that eventually relocated. Their name was still on the gates.

Those were businesses located on the premises. 40 Berner Street was specifically a house. When the club took over, they knocked out some walls and did some work to build their stage, party room, etc. It was still a house in that Diemshitz and wife lived on the top floor. The servant, Mila, probably also lived in the house. And accomodations were also allowed for people staying briefly.

          Tom,

Since we hear that Lave was staying in one of the cottages, can we infer based on your comments above that they were for longer term visitors/residents?
