Hi Herlock,
During the twenty-six years between his March 1903 Pall Mall Gazette interview in London and his 1929 death in Bournemouth, the detective most closely associated with the Whitechapel murders fell off the social radar. From available records this keen gardener and rose-grower does not appear to have been a member of any of the town’s horticultural or social clubs, nor any of its many Freemason Lodges.
The Bournemouth Graphic, 12th May 1916, reported the funeral of Mr. James Anderson of ‘Belgravia,’ Holdenhurst Road, Bournemouth, at which one of the mourners was a “Mr. Abberlin [sic] (Knyveton Gardens Bowling Club).”
The club exists today, but a search through the old membership records by the generous Match Secretary, Paul Beards, failed to locate a Mr. Abberlin or Abberline.

Thanks for that information Simon. Fred must have been quite a private person then? I’d have expected him to have been a kind of minor local celebrity.
So so it looks like we will have to make do with the possible photograph in the Evans/Rumbelow? Do we know if there are any descendants around? I’m assuming that a search has been made?Regards
Sir Herlock Sholmes.
