  • Crime Rates in the 1880's

Can anyone direct us towards some records of crime rates in 1880's London (or Whitechapel in particular)?

Every documentary and book I've seen makes vague statements about "high crime" and "murder was not unusual"; but it would be interesting to have some firm facts in this respect. Particularly when contemplating the possibility of seperate Stride/Eddowes perpetrators, or the possible addition of Tabrum (etc).

    Thanks.

Your best bet to learn about these kinds of things would probably be to try and get hold of a copy of the work by the likes of Henry Mayhew or Charles Booth, social researchers in the Victorian era. I'm not sure that there would be any official (or accurate) stats on it as crime occurred at such a frequent rate.

    Cheers,
    Adam.
