  • Goldstone Street?

    Hi,
I just want to check something I'm not certain about, I'm sure someone on here will know for sure though.
A Goldstone Street, Whitechapel did not exist in 1888 right? And any written reference to it probably means Goulston Street? Yes?

    Thanks
    Debs

    Hi Debs

As far as I can tell, there's never been a Goldstone Road anywhere in London let alone Whitechapel. There's one in Brighton though if that helps .

Indeed. Likewise, there was no "Great Powell Street" either, but if you rely on some accounts it's where Sarah Lewis lived

Could it be that Goldstone existed but not as an officially recognised street?

For example a street which locals reffered to as Goldstone Street but was probably called something else?

Perhaps there was a jewellers or Gold Specialist residing on the Street, maybe a family named Goldstone?

I come across a property reffered to as the Vicarage, it was no were near a church and had never been reffered to in official documents, maps or deeds.

Instead the Locals gave it the name as a Vicar had once resided there.

          Just a thought, happy huntin'
          Regards Mike

IIRC, given that "Goldstone Street" is only mentioned in the context of where Eddowes' apron was found, it's almost certain that whoever reported it simply mis-heard what the witnesses were saying.
            Kind regards, Sam Flynn

Ah, but it isn't only mentioned in that context Sam, I found it in something completely unrelated to JTR and quite official, hence the question and me being unsure.
Anyway, I trust you all that there wasn't a Goldstone street in Whitechapel...or London.
