  • average walking speeds

There seems to be fairly widespread agreement among scholars that these are sound average speed estimates. The variables that effect pedestrian speed include, persons specific leg length, persons specific stamina, and the terrain to be covered. The estimates given below represent level, flat, and paved ground.

women 3 mph or 15,840 ft per hour or 264 ft per minute
men 3.5 mph or 18,480 ft per hour or 308 feet per minute
I hope this helps someone. Respectfully Dave

    Hello Dave,

Excuse me for asking, but these figures, do they take into account type of footwear? And is this an estimation for this period of time (era..Victorian)?

Regarding your second point..It may help a great deal, especially when considering Mitre Sq to the GS graffito, likewise the length of time the PC on his beat took to reach the victim in Bucks Row.

    best wishes

I imagine all the experiments had footwear as a controlled variable. So. no i doubt they accounted for aspects like poor footwear. Dave

          Dave,

It should probably be noted that Met and City police forces required their men on beat to maintain a steady 2.5 mph pace. Naturally, things would happen on each tour that would modify that standard, but beat times were determined by that speed.

I don't know exactly how fast I walk, but from the Liz Stride site to Mitre Square took me 14 minutes.
