Does anyone know the date when the Mile End Vigilance Committee formed?
    Best regards,

I think it was Sepember 10th 1888, or that was the date of the first meeting.

Hello Jack. That's the Whitechapel vigilance committee formed in the Crown pub, Mile End road?

      Try September 10, 1888.

      Cheers.

        Adam,

The first meeting was on September 10th, when George Lusk was made Chairman.
Other committee members included Mr. Joseph Aarons, the landlord of The Crown public house on Mile End Road (treasurer), Mr. B. Harris (secretary) , and Messrs. Cohen, H. A. Harris, Laughton, Houghton, Lord, Isaacs, Rogers, Mitchell, Barnett, Hodgkins, Lindsay, Jacobs and Charles Reeves, the local entertainer. . The Daily Telegraph reported on October 5, 1888 that the leading members of the committee were "drawn principally from the trading class, and include a builder, a cigar-manufacturer, a tailor, a picture-frame maker, a licensed victualler, and 'an actor.'" The latter was probably Charles Reeves.

Charles Reeves' daughter recounted much of her father's involvement in a book I believe. In it she mentions the origins of the committee. Though I can't for the life of me remember. It's age, you see...

        best wishes

        Phil

Now I believe there is an article in Ripperologist about this very subject.

Cant remember who its by but I think it was Sept 08 edition.

Reeves lived in Bucks Row prior to Nichoks murder. His daughter went to the Board School. Now theres a fact.

September 10 is, of course, correct. And I'm happy to see the committee called by its proper name. Far too many uninformed people call it the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee.

Monty is much too modest. "Defenceless Whitechapel,' by Neil Bell, appeared in Ripperologist 95 (September 2008) and is a tour de force examination of the several vigilance committees organized in the wake of the Ripper murders. Back issues of all Ripperologist editions are available.

Tour de force? I own no bicycle Don.

As well as the Vigilanties, it also covers the misreported Holt incident and the boxing life of one of Holts accusers, Wolf Bendoff, Heavyweight contender and Princess Alice regular*.
