3d map of jack?

Hi all,

I'm trying to make a 3d map with google sketch up but It's really difficult because i don't have the right maps. I tried using Google Earth and the map off casebook, But i don't get to see the actual building heights.

Any advice on making a 3d map of jack the ripper?

Hi,

I presume it's 3D maps of the crime scenes that you want, rather than JTR himself. If so, you might get some inspiration from the East End photos threads on here. There's also a PC game (Sherlock Holmes V Jack the Ripper) which has 3D representations of the scenes, which you can access through youtube. If it's images of JTR you want, then you could try building up your own picture from witness accounts and various contemporary press images of suspects, both of which are available on here. Be warned though, witness statements and press reports vary, and there is no consensus on what he actually looked like.

Jake's images never fail to astound, even when I know I've seen them before. I wish I could do stuff like this.

Lately I've been doing something completely different.. However, I've done bits & pieces over a number of sites, but mostly with moving footage in mind...(ie. models for only certain POV's, etc).

Let's see if any of those recons & associated projects come off the ground, so I could put some proper hours into it - and for the time being, I can't say much more (Stoopid, I know).

From past & repeated experience, I don't hold my breath, though.
Still, I'm not all done yet ...


Nathanlee - for the building elevations, you might have to eyeball it from photos & go generic as regards the models themselves. Also, the Tower Hamlets planning register has elevations for some surviving buildings & of course the NA/BL have old plans - but I believe that would be too massive a task.

Wow...no kidding, those are awesome! How accurate are they to the actual locations? (not a sniping question, just unfamiliar with the context of where they came from)...and if they're actual representations, can you go around back, down alley ways, inside buildings and even with the body positions in their correct spots, etc, so we can see the ins and outs virtually for those of us who'll never leave the other country?

Having worked on numerous articles with Jake, I can confirm these images are pretty accurate and true to the locations.

Jake works with various maps, both pre and post 1888, and lots and lots of photos. He then takes wall textures, window shapes etc from these photos and basically builds from the ground up.

The only ‘liberty’ he has taken with the Mitre Square shots was the inclusion of the Kearley & Tonge sign. We agreed to include it because it was such an iconic image however in 1888 it wasn’t on their buildings.

There is no reason why a 3-D recon of the area cannot be done and Im quite confident it will be. However a lot of work is required, along with dedication.

Attached is an image that was going to be used during our Wovles conference in 2007. It was dropped because of time constraints and I kinda regretted it. It’s a view of St James place showing the positions of various witnesses in relation to the Eddowes murder. It goes to show the benefits of Jakes fantastic pioneering work in the field.
