    Street Signs

If this is a repeat - I'm sorry

Were the street signs of the time (1888) painted white lettering on a black plate or the other way round? I've never seen a street sign in any of the photos of the sites taken at the time.

I also remember hearing that the reason for street signs being positioned at the height they are (and still are to this day) was due to it being the correct eye level for a driver of a horse and cart? Anyone shed any light?
