I'm assuming Jack was there because he felt it unsafe to operate again in Whitechapel, though I personally think he could've pulled one more kill off in the district before the police went on red alert (as was the case after the DE). As for Kate, it seems likely she was trying to earn back the money she'd spent on drink that night. Or at least those are the obvious scenarios.
There is nothing in evidence that suggests she was Jack the Ripper's second victim aside from investigative speculation....she may be his sole victim that night,.. like the 3 other solo kill nights attributed to him.
My sentiments exactly, mate. I think Kate was his one and only that night. In fact, the majority of evidence that we have indicates that being the case more so than not.
One thing Mitre Square did have going for it as far as safety was concerned that night....a trolley full of coppers all within shouting distance. Harvey, Watkins, Pearce, Marriot, Halse, Long, Morris the night watchman...

And at least 2 just missed seeing the man.
Kate's is definitely the murder that makes me percieve Jack as being 'lucky'. I still think it's plausible for him to have did what he did in the apparent timeframe that he had to work with and still not get caught though.
