Yes - I have just had exactly the same experience.

Sorry for wasting people's time with this rubbish.

    Dont Waste Your Time

I registered 24 hours before last Satuday's match. In the 3 hours that the site was 'free' I only managed to look at 3 records - and then the actual census page did not load up. They were obviously in melt down.

I have been onto the site tonight - found something I want to view - I am than asked to pay.

I then did a search for the records I found last Saturday - guess what! - they are no longer there!!

It would seem that you have to keep re-registering 24 hours before each match - not something they are making obvious.

Just one big con - I'm off to watch the footie!!!

Someone has just very kindly sent me news of a special offer of free access to all the records on findmypast.co.uk (including the 1911 census) tonight and next Wednesday, to coincide with England World Cup games. The only snag is that you have to register by midnight the day before taking advantage of the offer, so those who don't already have a username and password will have to wait until Wednesday. More details here:

I have cancelled both subscriptions ot Ancestry and Find My Past. My local library offers free access to Ancestry, and the East Yorkshire Family History Service based at the Hull Heritage Centre offers free Ancestry and free Find My Past.

I seem to be getting inundated with emails from both Find my Past, Ancestry, and National Archives informing me of these new packages, but everytime you follow the link they send you to a "Enter your credit card details" page!!

I resent having to pay two premium subscriptions for this and Ancestry.com - they should join up, or at least offer a discount for each others' members. Given that we have separate websites offering ostensibly the same online census service, I can't help but feel ripped-off by this state of affairs.

Thank you, Smiffy. Although they seem to have been bombarding me with newsletters lately, I haven't received that one!

Yes, I will be interested to know whether I can have the combined FMP Explorer/1911 discount on top of my loyalty renewal discount. I suspect there'll be a catch there somewhere.

It's just been announced that the 1911 census will be available through a flat-rate subscription from 21 October. The rates are £40 for six months and £60 for a year. There will be various discounts when the subscription is bought together with one to other records on www.findmypast.com:

I see they have now taken up your suggestion:

The National Archives, in collaboration with UK-based family history website findmypast.com, is providing seven other archives and libraries around England and Wales with free access to the recently completed online records of the 1911 census.
    ...
The seven institutions soon to launch free access to the census records are:

    Birmingham Archives & Heritage
    Devon Record Office (Exeter)
The National Library of Wales (Aberystwyth)
Manchester Archives and Local Studies and Greater Manchester County Record Office (sharing one institutional account)
    Norfolk Record Office
    Nottinghamshire Archives
    Tyne and Wear Archives

    complete households

I was emailed off-group earlier today and told about the comma (not the
full stop) and it definitely works. The other thing I find of use was,
having located my garbled ancestors, I could place their (uniquely
mistranscribed) names in the boxes in the advanced search where you can
limit the search by other household members, leave the main boxes blank
apart from the comma, and get an index of the complete household.
    (from Soc.Gen.Brit)
    Regards,
    Peter

    Hi Simon

It was OK until around the start of December. Now it's slower than a politician's brain.
