By far this is my very favourite thread...I only wish I had something more than words to contribute to it.
To see these evocative photo's of existing buildings and those long gone, goes a long way to help us who've never been to London get a firmer picture of what life was like (and still is for some) it seems.

I definitely like the idea about the object being a photo tray below the window in Miller's Court. In hindsight, it makes perfect sense, and if that is what it is, then the photographer just simply forgot to remove it before he took the shot (or just didn't think about it - taking crime scene photographs were quite unheard of in those days, while we today have very strict rules for that sort of thing).

Of course it is difficult to know for sure, but the 'photo tray' is the best explanation I have heard so far.

This is Lupton's Corn-Chandlers Shop at 94 Burdett Road, Mile End.
A-Does anyone have any pics of this area from the period?

C-Does anyone know how close this was to the Burdett Cottage?

Seriously, though, these images were posted on the threads ages back and then languished in the Photo Archive. Phil and Rob's book is-jam packed with pics, many of which are far rarer than these (Whitby Collection anyone?)

These all come from the Tower Hamlets Archive, but I guess there was only so many the chaps could squeeze into the book.
