Those shots remind me of my first trips to the East End in the early '70s, Chris: stark, utilitarian streetscapes devoid of trees and flowerpots and, on the sidestreets at least, remarkably free of cars.

A question

I was re-reading my copy of "The London of Jack the Ripper-Then and Now" last night and I was drawn to the 1930's shot of the Princess Alice (page 175).

What I wanted to know, is when and why was the 3rd and 4th floor removed?

I am thinking WW2 damage, but wondered if that was the case, why wasn't the rest of the public house damaged?

Hi Mike, good question, can't answer it but good question. All I know is they disappeared between 1938 and 1956. There are some Surveyor Instructions books held at the London Metropolitan Archives for Truman Breweries and they just carried little notes like 'Princess Alice, roof leaking bedroom ceiling 18/4/45'. Other than that there isn't much to go on. Trumans did have it's own magazine but I can't recall if they covered that period.

I decided to visit some of the locations off the beaten track, and hope to return when it's darker to some of the small enty's and yards!

Chris - I have always assumed Hull and Kingston-Upon-Hull to be the same place in the same way that Newcastle is Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.
