  • Just a stab in the dark but it's not Maj. Harry as in Major, is it?

    • Hi All,

      Could the surname be Maple?

      Regards,

      Simon
Never believe anything until it has been officially denied.

      • If anything, I expect it to be a longer name otherwise all the word could have been written in the space. That's assuming of course that Harry was his surname and not his first name. There were 91 men with the first name Harry born between 1850 and 1870 in the Mile End Old Town area alone in the 1891 census.

        • I hate to see this thread dropping down the ranks, so here are a few images I found recently. Sorry about the 'Getty Images' overlay on most of them.

What appears to be Brady Street Dwellings (date unknown)

Another guess, but I think this is Quaker Street, near the junction of Grey Eagle Street. The demolition of both streets to make way for more brewery probably puts this at c.1970. You can just make out Christ Church in the distance.

          • John - looking at where Gardiner's Corner is, I suppose the last shot was taken at the edge of Goulston Street, do you think?

                • Mr Katz sign above the window is still there. Dids went mental at it during the second London Job in June 2006.

                      • Here's a photo of a knife sharpener in Whitechapel in 1885.

Maybe he sharpened the knives of you-know-who.

Probably Whitechapel High Street though the description says Whitechapel Road.

It's a thumbnail and I can't enlarge it. Does anyone have a decent copy of this?

                            • Hi Rob, Harry in post 703 was a pleasant-looking young man, wasn't he? In spite of the fact that he may have known some of the Kosminski/Abraham bunch.

                              Best,
