Post 360 has a photo of the building at the North corner of Elder Street and Folgate Street. It looks very similar to the building in the 'R Sonenfield' photo.

By Jove, so it does! (Meaning the building on the corner of Elder Street - the fence and the pillars/roof of the porch are practically identical.) Well spotted.

I think it is R Sonenfield without a doubt!! How good is that!!!- Well done chaps!!!!- and am sure it's probably still there!!!
Not happy about CLOTHIER though (although it should be......is there a CLOTHIEN?)

I think what we have is an "R" with some of the pixels nibbled out here and there by the compression process so it looks more like an "N", Suz.

Rob Clack's blog postings of Durward St shots from the 1980s inspired me to post these, taken in or near 1989. They're from "I Hired a Contract Killer", a dead pan comedy by the Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki, starring Jean Pierre Leaud and Margi Clarke (& featuring Joe Strummer). Most of the film takes place in the East End.

Essex Wharf has been pulled down (well, the back part is still standing)

The Board School, which in the film houses a shady dive called "Honolulu Bar"




In the similar vein of typical Kaurismäki humour, the Rowton/Tower House in Fieldgate St (the "Monster Doss" mentioned by Jack London) is none other than "Hotel Splendide" in the film.

Thanks. I've been meaning to post these for a long time, but of course I'd lent the DVD to someone.

I think it was about the same time (in 1989) that I took my first & only "JtR" walk (the more epic "London Jobs" don't count). Audience of 2, late October, dark & drizzly. Great!

Essex Wharf was demolished in 1990, so that may help date the making of the film. I remember when Essex Wharf was gone, but Brady House was still standing, though it was demolished VERY soon after.

Once again, brilliant find.These things continue to come out of the woodwork and for that we should be grateful. Who knows what is still out there?

The film was released in 1990, so I assumed that it could have been the previous year.

But I'm pretty sure my JtR tour was in '89 We skipped Durward St because of the rain....grr. But then again, all of that might have been wasted on me with my rather pedestrian interest at the time....

Hi Jake,

Some great screencaps there. I wonder how they got to the back of the Board School? must have been a bit of a death trap back then. There was a doorway at the back of the school on the Winthrop Street side but that was bricked up back then.

This drawing is of the Brady Boys Club in Durward Street which John has posted before. It was right next to Essex Wharf and this angle is from the little alley by Brown & Eagle warehouses. Durward Street is out of picture to the left side.
