Excellent photos Monty. Interesting that though Arbour Square and Bethnal Green had Parade Sheds in 1888 for duty parades Commercial Street didn't. When I was posted to Camberwell in '66 the parade room was under repair and we paraded in the yard except in 'inclement' weather. Bl**dy freezing weather apparently didn't count as 'inclement'!!
1901 First Color Motion Picture Discovered, Made In London
I thought this was pretty interesting- a color movie from Queen Victoria's day! There are also still images of London in color.
The short color film can be played if you scroll down below the still images. I think the children look so cute in color, versus our usual view of them in black and white! It brings the past to life even more.
The obscure film segments, which giving a never seen before glimpse of the Edwardian age, were painstakingly restored by workers at the National Media Museum in Bradford.
Slightly off-topic I know, but look at the degree of high polish on that lino floor in the corridor...amazing isn't it...you could almost eat your dinner off it...
Thank you Jason for the great photographs - the lighting, exposure and slight fuzziness just adds to the atmosphere. Makes it feel like you're walking in the streets and mews of the East End in the 1880s!

Was the soft focus/blurring not an intended effect aimed at capturing an atmospheric "feel"?
All the best
Dave
No Dave......it is just poor photography ! i could be all clever and say i was trying to create Spitalfields through the eyes of a gin soaked prostitute in 1888 but that would be a lie.......just poor photography......thats the technique i used
i must say that the one taken of the Houses of Parliament is quite eerie....it was very misty and the picture doesnt really say "2012".......that one i will claim as being half decent....t'others are just shite !!
