I think it's not the locations near Stepney Gasworks or Limehouse Causeway. The photo is either nearby Middlesex Street (see map post 3007) or it's in the area below, where Booth described the Jewish residents of Brunswick Place and Provdence Place off of it to the north side.

I think you're right as regards your graphic, Roy

The map shows a typical court with arched alleyway entrance as with Millers Court and the photo shows 2 buildings in the background that correspond with those on the map.

    • Look how close Providence Row is to the Berner Street murder site!

      Thanks everyone.

Does anyone have a current picture? I walked on that street 2 weeks and ago and must have gone right past ir without noticing it.

        • Video Tour Inside St. Mary's Underground Station

I just stumbled over a really cool video; it's a guided tour of the old St. Mary's underground station between Whitechapel and Aldgate.

The original 1884 structures are still standing and in this video offers a pretty good look at them. There's also an interesting segment which discusses the station's use as an air raid shelter in WWII- the rather primitive ventilation system installed then is still intact.

          Enjoy!

            • Robert Frank: London

This image of London by photographer Robert Frank is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
(An amazing museum if you ever have the chance to visit.)

Its dark fog-enshrouded streets struck me as having a dreamlike yet somewhat 'Ripperish' effect... I love the illuminated warning sign that says simply "LOOK".

              Best regards,

              • Just for future reference, should anyone wish to ask, i have all the photos in this thread in a file and they can be accessed with ease should the person need me to. Will save trawling through god knows how many pages to find something...took me a while to do it but it was well worth doing, especially when i do it on a slideshow !

Thanks Jason, that was a great idea! Well done.

                  Hi guys.

I posted a thread in Pub Talk that I think many of you old-photograph buffs will enjoy. They're all vintage black and white images, and are... shall we say, unusual?

                  • Just some pics of me in London, last week. Nothing particularly new or exciting about them I'm afraid, but it was my first visit to Whitechapel so thought a few photo's were in order. I found it quite emotional in a way, to be in these places, which is odd considering how much they've changed....

                    • Nice pics John.

If you can avoid the tour groups, try and get to Mitre Square on a Friday night. This because St Botolphs rings her bells then and that is emotional.

The photos run left to right and down, in order. All you have to do is post a number and location. Simples.

Yes, there are a few of the same spot, dont care, I like em.

                        • .

                          Hi Monty,
These are good photos, thanks for sharing them. It's nice that the date stamp is on them so future generations will know when they were taken. (Of course Casebook will still be on the internet for future generations!)

The one with the person sleeping on the street (literally) made me feel sad.

                          • Yes Belinda,

A young couple did check on him and he was fine. Just having a nap.

In those shots are Angel Alley, Mrs Longs clock, St Leonards and the inside of Shoreditch Town all to name but a few.
