  • Hi Stephen,

A bit of jiggery-pokery in Photoshop reveals that the name above the corner shop at No. 36 is "B. Gadd", if that's any help.

    Regards,

    Simon
Never believe anything until it has been officially denied.

    • Hi Stephen,

It's Brook Street, Ratcliff. A continuation of Cable Street.
One of those ladies may be Bella Gadd, a draper.

Yes, although apparently the lady's name was Bilhah - it's a Biblical thing, I reckon.

        A nice photograph altogether, though.

        Regards,

        Mark

Blimey, thanks Simon. Maybe the street can be identified by someone from that info.

                  • Area south of Swallow Gardens in 1979.

I've just found a rather nice picture on Flickr, that shows the area just to the south of Swallow Gardens as it was in 1979.

Like today, the area is a car park, but this view shows how it looked before they constructed the Bank extension of the Docklands Light Railway, which today emerges from the ground at this point and rises up to the level of the railway viaduct on the left.

                        You mean the videos?

If you note the first one (Petticoat Lane 1903) you will see an old man with white hair who was obviously around at the time of the scare.

Now that thought did hit me hard.

                        Hi John, Monty-

Virtually everyone in the 1903 Petticoat Lane film was around at the time of the scare. The film was made only 15 years after the Whitechapel murders. Except for the children, all of them lived through the Autumn of Terror.

                        • Durward St building seen from Whitechapel tube platform yesterday - and also a design on the wall at the new Wapping station (only a couple stops from Whitechapel of course).

                          • Went for a stroll today around the area (as I am posting the images directly here I dont know how to write descriptions between each image) - I visited Tollet St (Mishter Lusks house), Durward Street (where workman were doing some serious drilling right by the murder scene), Henriques St, Rampart/Kinder St (just because I saw another posters image of that derelict block and I wanted a pic there too!), The Artful Dodger pub, The Still and Star pub, Hoop and Grapes pub, Goulston Street (The Juwes are ....), Duke of Wellington pub (you can see a trend emerging here), round the back of Aldgate High St, and some other little nooks and crannys - nice day out and a good few miles walking.

                            • Thanks for the photos, Adam. Excellent, as usual. Where did you capture the two blokes sitting under the tree?

Those 2 men were sitting in Itchy Park next to Christchurch.
