  • So they've taken the fences down at each end of the service road by the market? That's nice.

The fence is still there at the Crispin St end.

      • A photomontage I've put together of the old Gardiner's Department Store at the junction of Whitechapel High Street and Commercial Road. Now the site of the Lloyds TSB building.

        • A quiz/

          Where am I?

Now some of you know this and therefore not allowed to play. Especially you Mr Firth.

This, as far as Im aware, is the 2nd oldest photo of a Jack related crime scene.

Pinchin Street? Backchurch Lane running vertically, the start of PS running to the right?

                  • Ok, I admit it...Chris is correct.

It is, in fact, an aerial shot of Swallow Gardens taken in 1908 provided by Rob Clack.

I remember seeing a similar photo of Tower Bridge in a book of aerial photos. The caption read something along the lines of "Tower Bridge taken from the Hot Air Balloon 'Corona' (there was a date I cannot recall) 1908". The images were similar and I feel this photo was taken moments before or after the Tower Bridge one.

Its a shame I cannot recall the books name.

                    • Question

This marker/monument is in the park on Whitechapel Road, which is formerly the site of Whitechapel church and rectory. What is the monument? Is there an inscription?

There's a sort of answer here:
Few graves remain in what used to be St Mary's churchyard but this one is a surprising exception. It is the tomb of several C18 members of the Maddock family who, it is to be assumed, are blissfully unaware of the many changes that have gone on around them since they were interred.

                            • Some crime scene illustrations from The New York Herald. Some of these will be familiar to some people.

The illustrator drew the wrong building for this first one. George yard Buildings was next door to these:

                              • Brilliant Rob. Being greedy now but I don't suppose they did a Swallow Gardens one too? Some interesting angles in there - can anyone englighten me as to where the first Mitre Square picture is supposed to be by the way, with the light?
