this thread is is definitely the best on casebook...its the one i look forward to seeing the most and get over excited when i see a new posting on it !! think i need to get out more !!

one of these days i am certain that someone is going to find a new photograph of one of the main protagonists in this case !!

Nice photos Rob... I especially like the one of Saracens Head Yard, Aldgate. Where was that exactly?

It was on the South side of Aldgate, near Aldgate Pump. The Aldgate side can be in some of the above photographs. This is the entrance in 1883.

I was interested to read that "An important archive of early 20th and late 19th century Jewish East End of London photos has come into the possession of Jeecs."
JEECS is the Jewish East End Celebration Society and a selection from this archive can be seen at:

It would be interesting to know how many pics there are in this archive and what else is shown

Chris - that's an excellent link, thank you for sharing it. Some fascinating pictures on there - as well as the street scenes etc, I think 'the sweating song' paints a particularly vivid picture of the working conditions for many in the East End at the time, and at the same time also why the authorities were so concerned about potential political unrest. I agree that tantalising phrase 'selected photos' does hint at something much, much larger being held back, and that it would be absolutely fascinating to get some idea of the size and scope of the whole archive.

I wonder if Chris George has ever had anything to do with JEECS?

edit - just realised this is my 111th post; as a cricket fan that number makes me a little uneasy!

You've more guts than I have; everytime I've walked past Bishopsgate Police Station, I've thought about taking a photo or two. In the current climate however, I'd expect several of 'er Majesties Constabulary to come stampeding out to confiscate my camera and arrest me!

Oh really? Well you might like this then haha - I had had a few pints by the point I walked past the station and actually also got this shot of a Police Officer going in the front entrance, I just snapped this very quickly as I walked past behind the officer going in - dark and blurry obviously as I couldnt use a flash!!

Catherine Mylett (also previously referred to as Rose Mylett and various variations of that name) was murdered here in Clark's Yard Poplar. The second view shows that the site of the yard is, like so much of the east end, buried under tons of concrete.
