Thanks Andrew - that's stopped me wondering! Thanks for the kind compliment too.

In that case, I did a rather more 'round in circles' route than I realised - as that would mean that photo is the other end of the same street seen crossing Hanbury St here -

Finally, here are a couple of photomontages, using modern day pictures taken last Saturday, along with a couple of old images from the Casebook photo archive.

What, that blurry old thing? I was looking for slightly better quality than that!

Princelet street. I think you've got this building in one of your photos too, Andrew?

Plaque on the wall of Christ Church School, Brick Lane, c. 1873, showing the older building it replaced 'that formerly stood at the northwest angle of the church yard of this parish' (presumably Canon Barnett's school?).

              The new school building itself.

Brick Lane mosque, originally built as a Hugenot chapel, which is the period the sundial dates from (it is dated 1745). In between it has also been a Great Synagogue.

One last one for now - can anyone confirm whether this is the correct location for what was formerly Sion (alternatively Zion) Square, residence of Pizer and possibly (a) Kosminski? Now Mulberry Place, although the map I was using was somewhat vague about even that.

It was a great moment when I finally realised how to get file sizes smaller.
              -------------------------------------------------------------------------

By the way - Andrew, do you have a website? I have googled your name but not sure whether the 'Andrew Firth photographer' I get is you or not? Looking to add a link on my website, if it is.

                tnb,

Yes, the building on Princelet Street is the same as the night shot I took with the six second exposure.

As for a website, well, I have a blog which I'll update in the next couple of days at http://fromthegardenshed.blogspot.com/

Plus I have a flickr page at http://www.flickr.com/photos/andrew_firth/ where you can download higher resolution versions of the stuff I put on this thread.

                All the best
                Andrew

                  Hello, folks.

I'm a new member, although I've been reading along for a while. I just wanted to say that this is my favorite thread and to thank all of you whose contributions have made it so interesting.

My girlfriend and I are hoping to visit London and we really enjoy seeing the very detailed photographs of the architecture as well as the fascinating photomontages of old and new together.

                  Thank you,
                  Clueless

I know, of course, that the attached image of Dorset Street is extremely well known but this version is the best I have seen for some time and may be of use

I guess that these may have been seen before. They're from "The Real Dickens Land", by H. Snowden Ward and Catharine Weed Barnes Ward (1904), which is available at Google Books. Unfortunately the photos haven't scanned very well.

Some photographs I got hold of recently.

Looking north towards Aldgate from Jewry Street. The corner building is where the Aldgate Post Office was in 1888.
