    • It's from the time when Tim Donovan of Crossingham's went into partnership with 80s boyband Bros. His constant retelling of his last encounter with Annie Chapman inspired the Bros hit 'I Owe You Nothing'.

      • Time for a pint. In pubs that aren't there any more.

I never knew about this one - the Grey Eagle on the corner of Grey Eagle Street and Quaker Street:

And two more pictures from 1970 when the brewery was being extended.

And the late lamented Roebuck on the corner of Durward Street, 1993. This is probably the best image I've seen of it. Apart from the memories in my head...la di da....

        • John, anyone,

Re The Grey Eagle. The painting above the door. Wasnt that reclaimed by someone? I swear I have read somewhere that it was rescued.

          • When the Sculcoates Inn was ripped down in Hull, several local historians ransacked the place for momentoes, including tiles and engraved windows!!

The pub was next door but one to Robert D'Onston Stephenson's former home Willows House!!

                  • The area were Spiders is situated used to be a part of the "Groves" and was back to back mills, with small slums crammed in between.

It was an awful place to live with infant mortality very high and poor sanitation.

The mills have all since gone with only a couple of the older building still standing.

I have a good friend who is creating a massive online photo archive of the area, but i can't find it!!!
                    Regards Mike
