You're not coming in here, mate! (Unless of course you go round to the other end of the street.... ) Whites Row Car Park, and the fenced off end of the former Dorset Street.

K (IMHO) Maybe a uniform date check may help......boys?
Having got as good an enlargement as I can I think it may be 407K or possibly even A. Though the photo was from a Mile End studio the helmet plate doesn't look quite right for the Met, even were it to be 1870s.

I did mine on the daft Kodak Easyshare which is great for simple stuff- we need someone who has FO Photoshop or something- I reckon this guy isn't actually a contemporary though

It's amazing to me that someone had the foresight to even take a photo like this, because such ordinary scenes of everyday life must have been taken for granted. (How many people today have a photo of themselves paying the rent??)

Check out Rent Man's snappy bowler hat, clean white collar, shiny shoes & walking stick compared to the grubby family who's giving him their money.

My God, that lane is so narrow, dark and gloomy, as if the walls truly are closing in! I wonder what it must have been like to live in a place so oppressive- and to know that if you slipped down the economic ladder you would end up some place much worse.

A lot of food for thought in that photograph.

                          Best regards, Archaic
Hi, looking through all these photos, this one stood out to me as so depressing.
How dark these places are, just a glint of daylight at the end of the alleyway and I can only imagine what its like when night falls!
Imagine you would have to be so careful of a night, I know people lived like that but still can't think you would get too used to it.
Love to know why (as you mentioned) this would be photographed, maybe for the landlord for some reason.
Thanks for this thought provoking picture.
                          Thanks Looby64

If Swallow Gardens was still a public right of way...

If things had been different, and Swallow Gardens had remained a public right of way, rather than being converted to a business lock-up, then this is what I reckon it might have looked like today. This is a photomontage using several different photographic elements to create the illusion.
