      • Oh boy. You post a few photographs thinking you did quite well and then Rob appears with an absolute cracker like the one above. How's that for making something quite mundane and ugly as a railway arch look beautiful.

I agree, that photo really is spectacular. I love shots with high contrast black and white. Top stuff there Rob!

John, I'm going to post my Mitre Passage looking up shot, unless you post yours first!

An appropriately squiffy "Kate's eye view" taken from the pavement outside what would have been 29 Aldgate High Street in 1888, now the appropriately-named* "Matrix" building:

              * I say "appropriately-named", because matrix is Greek for "womb". Not a lot of people know that... as I discovered when I mentioned it on the tour

              • In reply to the above two excellent shots, here are a couple of similar black and white images taken yesterday. These aren't as good though....

Same area as in Rob's photo, but looking the other way.

                • Sam, the site of Kate's arrest is where the sign saying 33 ALDGATE HIGH STREET is today. The MATRIX building is on the site of The Three Nuns.

                      I should have taken notes

Edit 1: Actually, Phil, I think that one I posted earlier was of "33 Aldgate High St".

Edit 2: Yup, just checked on Google Earth, and the photo I posted earlier was indeed the site of Kate's arrest (33 Aldgate High St). But not the Matrix building - my apologies for that.

                          • Terrific photos everyone; thanks for sharing them.

Sam, I think that popular thriller 'The Matrix' would have been called something very different if the producers had known it meant "Womb".

After seeing Andrew's photo of the dreadfully undernourished bollards in Mitre Square,

I am starting up a 'SAVE THE BOLLARDS! Skinny Bollards Relief Fund'.

Please send your cash donations to Rob, he can purchase a sack of breadcrumbs to feed them. Thanks... together we can make a difference.

They're a bit weedy looking aren't they? There's some similar ones round the back of Priory House in the old orange market too.

No, when it comes to bollards, what we want are big huge cannons, captured from the French, with a big cannonball shoved in the end....

Yes! Firm, robust edifices! Gnarled and battered with the history of Napoleonic conflict and several crashes by horse, cart and tram! Hurrah to that!

'Bollard-aid' is only a phone call away. Anybody got Bob Geldof's number?
