But why is that huge building on Commercial Street so incredibly narrow? It looks like it's about as deep from front to back as a modern car.
What was it designed to be used for?

It's about a standard size. Probably just looks thin in the photo.

...why is that huge building on Commercial Street so incredibly narrow?

It ain't. As Rob says, it's caused by the distortion created by the use of a wide-angle lens, which makes the car in the right foreground look much larger than it actually is. Look at the person walking by the third pillar from the right. That gives a better idea of the size of the building.

The Ten Bells is an even bigger Sh*t-hole upstairs than it is downstairs!

I found some other bits relating to the pub - it appears they plan to reinstate the two side entrances.
