The Hackney Gazette ran the story too (same photo). They described AJ Hone as Mr Ford's 'great-grandfather'. Still, I reckon they could have added another couple of "greats" there!

    That's local reporting for you.

Many thanks for finding and posting that, John. Woods Buildings was (and maybe still is) wonderfully evocative of JTR's time but I've never seen the two linked before, apart from by people here.

Effectively, yes, Adam. Unfortunately it's now blocked at both ends by metal gates. I was there last year when they were open and got some shots.

Ignoring the gas canisters and scaffolding (they've now gone) it would still be pretty much the same.

              • Does anyone have a large scan of the backsteps of 29 Hanbury Street?

                • Current WC Real Estate Prices?

I'm curious as to what Real Estate prices in Whitechapel are like. I know its becoming yuppified/gentrified, & the old buildings are being gutted or demolished to be turned into condos.

If there were an ordinary little LV-period storefront for sale (in as-is condition) how much would it sell for?

What about a small flat in one of the old buildings? Thanks, Archaic

                  • Doss-House, Here I Come

Holy Toledo, Stephen, talk about sticker-shock!

The prices on pg. 1 gave me a heart attack- 1.4 Million Pounds for a 3- BR? And the 1-BR ''budget'' flat on pg. 10 is nearly 400,000 Pounds! How can anyone possibly be able to afford to live in London?

Well, I'm afraid it's still the old doss-house leaning-rope for me.

                    Goodnight all. -Archaic

                      • I took a couple of friends around Whitechapel & Spitalfields this week, and took the following shots which I thought I'd post.

First, Abel's Buildings, complete with bollard.

                          • Andrew, I like the photo of the old setts under the pavement- sort of like having Historical X-Ray Vision. I can see right back into the LVP.

                            Best regards, Archaic
