I am surprised at how few prostitutes are listed. I know that many did not describe themselves as such but given that there were so many in the area I find their absence surprising.
In order to know virtue, we must first aquaint ourselves with vice!

The records below complete the alpha section at the beginning of the 1885-87 registers. After these entries, the admission register reverts to its normal listing of daily entries, starting at Tuesday 17 November 1885.

A brief word about the structure of the 1885-87 registers
These registers are divided into 20 sections. The records below, with those I have already posted, make up sections 1 and 2.
Gareth has very kindly offered to help with the transcription and is working on section 3. I will now begin on section 4 and we will be doing alternate sections so there is no duplication. As all records are individually dated this should not be too confusing!

Could William and Ann be related the Abrahams family that you have studied before? That is Golda Abrahams and children Aaron Kosminsky/Abrahams, Isaac Abrahams, Woolf Abrahams and Matilda Abrahams.

Born c. 1811, old enough to be an aunt of Thomas Arnold. Her descendants could include John Shepherd Arnold, the pawnbroker who testified against Ostrog in 1900.

William Adams must have been a very common name in the 19th century. You have mentioned at least four other persons of than name in your various lists.

*William Adams, husband of Agnes. Born abt 1836 Edmonton, Middlesex, England. Head of household Bethnal Green, London in 1881. Police officer.
*William Adams, born abt 1846 Spitalfields, London, England. Boarder of Christchurch, London in 1891.
*William Adams, born abt 1848, Woolwich Spitalfields, London. Resident of Thrawl Street in 1881.
*William Adams, born abt 1880 Spitalfields, London, England. Boarder of Christchurch, London in 1891.

Could be the descendants of the Carman and his wife or unrelated namesakes.

The three most prominent with that surname in the Ripper case are:

*James Brown, the witness who reported Elizabeth Stride "talking to a stoutish man about 5' 7" tall in a long black coat that reached to his heels. He has his arm against the wall. Stride was saying "No, not tonight, some other night." "
*Dr. Frederick Gordon Brown, the London police surgeon who performed the autopsy of Catherine Eddowes.
*Carrie Bown, the possible Jack victim killed in Manhattan, New York during 1891.

Could either have been a descendant of Robert and Mary Ann?

He could be related to John Barton, the milkman who was a witness in the case of Thomas Cutbush in 1891. Barton "said that on the night of March 7th he was at a dairy in Princes Road. He was in the yard when the prisoner ran from the road into the yard. The prisoner said he had been larking with some girls, and that some young men were after him to pitch into him, and that he had run into the yard for protection. The prisoner was allowed to remain for about a quarter of an hour, having concealed himself in a coal cellar." Cutbush was actually pursued by Robert Smith who had taken issue with Thomas tearing the dress of Isabel Fraser Anderson in public.

Your lists also mention a Chas. J. Barton, husband of Mary A. He was born c. 1851 in Kent, England. Listed as Head of household in Ratcliffe, London during 1881. He was a police officer at the time.

The most notable person of that surname involved in the Ripper case was , naturally, Thomas Barrett, the police constable who was first at the scene in the murder of Martha Tabram in 1888. John could be a relation of some sort.

Various lesser known figures of that name have been listed in various posting. Any idea if they were related?:

*Michael Barrett. A Fenian born in Drumnagreshial, Ederney area, County Fermanagh. He was executed on 26 May, 1868. His execution remains the last public hanging in Great Britain. Due to the Capital Punishment (Amendment) Act 1868, later executions took place behind prison walls.
*Richard Barrett. He was born c. 1851 in Middlesex, England. Listed as a Lodger in Christ Church, London during 1881. He was a resident of Flower and Dean Street.
*Ann Barrett. She was born c. 1854 in County Cork. Listed as a domestic servant in King's Bench, 4 during 1881.
*Michael Barrett. He was born c. 1860 in Islington, Middlesex, England. Listed as Lodger in Spitalfields, London during 1881. He was a resident of Flower and Dean Street.
*Mary A. Barrett. She was born c. 1861 in Spitalfields, Middlesex, England. She was listed as Head of household in Spitalfields, London during 1881.
*William Barrett. A boy discovered murdered at Upton Park on September 22, 1897. Case was listed among other unsolved cases in 1910.
*Mrs. Patrick Barrett. Niece of Francis Tumblety. Mentioned in 1907 to have inherited 10,000 dollars on the death of her uncle.

There are a few persons in your list which have the same surname. Could they be related?:

*Lucy Bridgman. Born c. 1855. One of the "missing" passengers of the Princess Alice in 1878.

Thanks, Byzantine, for this and your other posts. All very interesting but, with respect, please bear in mind that many of these names are rather common, some extremely so (e.g. the name "Brown" was mentioned earlier - heaven help us with "Smith", "Davies", "Cohen" and "Kelly" - even "Nichols" and "Chapman", for that matter).

It would be tricky enough tracing possible links to the main characters in the Ripper story, without drawing attention to those surnames who are only vaguely connected to the case, or not connected in any significant sense at all. To give an idea about the enormity of the task, we'll eventually be talking well in excess of twenty thousand records I'd imagine, and we could fill a server with such speculation. It will add nothing to the study of the subject if "Jane Evans" might have been related to "Stanley Evans", simply because somebody spots a matching pair of names entirely unconnected with the case.

Sparking off speculative genealogical goose-chases on a whim isn't making the best use of these fascinating (and invaluable) transcripts. Please don't let's turn this thread into the biggest "What if?" or "Who's that?" exercise in the history of Ripperology - we've enough of those to be getting on with, I think

                            Sincerely, etc.

                                28th Nov 1885 to 14th Dec 1885

Below are the records between the above dates. Please note that I've followed Chris's conventions, but have added one of my own, that doesn't compromise either the format or the data.

I've moved "Widow of..." and "Wife of..." to the "Remarks" column at the end - and have made a start on putting the (late) husbands' occupations there also, at least for the widows. I noted that there were a number of women in their 60s who were down as "Carman" or "Dock labourer", and realised that they must have been giving their spouse's occupations rather than their own. (I know times were hard, but... )

I've only made a start on this, and in the extract below you'll note that I've not touched those women whose husbands were still alive (quite right too!). I will be applying the convention more consistently in future, however - to wives and widows as well as children. It should make sorting and filtering spreadsheets simpler.
