He could be related to John Barton, the milkman who was a witness in the case of Thomas Cutbush in 1891. Barton "said that on the night of March 7th he was at a dairy in Princes Road. He was in the yard when the prisoner ran from the road into the yard. The prisoner said he had been larking with some girls, and that some young men were after him to pitch into him, and that he had run into the yard for protection. The prisoner was allowed to remain for about a quarter of an hour, having concealed himself in a coal cellar." Cutbush was actually pursued by Robert Smith who had taken issue with Thomas tearing the dress of Isabel Fraser Anderson in public.

Your lists also mention a Chas. J. Barton, husband of Mary A. He was born c. 1851 in Kent, England. Listed as Head of household in Ratcliffe, London during 1881. He was a police officer at the time.

The three most prominent with that surname in the Ripper case are:

*James Brown, the witness who reported Elizabeth Stride "talking to a stoutish man about 5' 7" tall in a long black coat that reached to his heels. He has his arm against the wall. Stride was saying "No, not tonight, some other night." "
*Dr. Frederick Gordon Brown, the London police surgeon who performed the autopsy of Catherine Eddowes.
*Carrie Bown, the possible Jack victim killed in Manhattan, New York during 1891.

Could either have been a descendant of Robert and Mary Ann?

William Adams must have been a very common name in the 19th century. You have mentioned at least four other persons of than name in your various lists.

*William Adams, husband of Agnes. Born abt 1836 Edmonton, Middlesex, England. Head of household Bethnal Green, London in 1881. Police officer.
*William Adams, born abt 1846 Spitalfields, London, England. Boarder of Christchurch, London in 1891.
*William Adams, born abt 1848, Woolwich Spitalfields, London. Resident of Thrawl Street in 1881.
*William Adams, born abt 1880 Spitalfields, London, England. Boarder of Christchurch, London in 1891.

Could be the descendants of the Carman and his wife or unrelated namesakes.

Born c. 1811, old enough to be an aunt of Thomas Arnold. Her descendants could include John Shepherd Arnold, the pawnbroker who testified against Ostrog in 1900.

Could William and Ann be related the Abrahams family that you have studied before? That is Golda Abrahams and children Aaron Kosminsky/Abrahams, Isaac Abrahams, Woolf Abrahams and Matilda Abrahams.

A brief word about the structure of the 1885-87 registers
These registers are divided into 20 sections. The records below, with those I have already posted, make up sections 1 and 2.
Gareth has very kindly offered to help with the transcription and is working on section 3. I will now begin on section 4 and we will be doing alternate sections so there is no duplication. As all records are individually dated this should not be too confusing!

I am surprised at how few prostitutes are listed. I know that many did not describe themselves as such but given that there were so many in the area I find their absence surprising.

    Hi Kat.

In fact, there are a number of specific symptoms of syphilis that are listed in the infirmary records - these include "tabes dorsalis", "condyloma lata" and "chancre". Sometimes, "syphilis" is explicitly used in the records. Whatever - these entries all document precisely the same disease (syphilis), and these symptoms appear at different stages of the illness.

With bubos it's slightly more tricky - whilst bubos can be a feature of syphilis, they can also appear in other venereal diseases, or even in non-sexually transmitted diseases like TB and, as has been noted, plague!

    Chris, you're a hero!
Making these entries available to people who haven't been able to get to see the documents themsdlves is worth acres of opinion on the boards.
