East End Grab-bag

A thread for interesting little stories or info about the places we know about in the East End, which though not necessarily directly linked to the JTR case, do give us fascinating tit-bits of history.

Here's a start - Feb 16th 1880. It seems that Walter Purkiss attracted trouble, even when he lived over the road...


And an update from March 3rd 1880:


And an advert letting us know that the Brady Boys Club in old Buck's Row was now up for grabs, June 2nd 1960.

In this item from Jan 1st 1927, "Gossett" seems to be a misprint for "Dossett" - which was itself the old name for Dorset St, wasn't it?

I was at the LMA today and skimming through the minutes for the Metropolitan Board of Works, 1893, I found a page that mentions street renaming. On 11th July 1893, it was decided that Princes Street would become Princelet St., George Street would be Lolesworth St. and Red Lion Court would be Puma Court.

Church Street was to be renamed CHRISTABEL STREET. This is something I have never seen mentioned before. However on 7th November, it was officially renamed Fournier Street.

Then in the MBW minutes of 28 June 1892, it was decided that Buck's Row did not need its name changing! One assumes the petitioning kicked off as on 25th October, it was renamed Durward Street.

The rest is history, as they say.
