  • Whitechapel map

Hello, for reconstruction and to find Jack's home, I'm looking for a good quality map of Whitechapel in 1888 or around that time, I could find some on the net, but the quality is not high enough, does anybody knows where to find one or does anybody has a Baedaker that can be scanned at good resolution?

    thanks for the help!

I don't know if you've seen the O/S map on Casebook yet, but it's pretty good. It's nearly 5MB, so I'd recommend you right-click/save:

Thanks for the map ! It's really great !

I've seen the original Montague John Druitt's note ("since friday etc") but I don't know where I can find it on the internet... I'm searching for it everywhere and I don't find it, that's so frustrating !

"O/S" stands for the Ordnance Survey, which has been the UK Government's national mapping agency for over a hundred years.

            Hello All,
would someone be able to locate and tell me on the map all of the asylums, or mental wards, and hospitals in the area. I see the London Hospital on the map but I don't know if that's the only one. I don't want to miss any of the above. If you can tell me I'd like to mark my copy of the map with x's where these are located. THANK YOU!

I don't think there were any other hospitals in the area covered by that map, and no asylums - although I stand to be corrected on that.

                Hi BK,

Back after the crash I posted a thread that was about these types of institutions. There are some links there, if they still work, that will connect you to a lot of info on this. Takes a bit of wading through on these links, but it's broken down by location. Hope it helps. Also, Chris and some of the others have posted some good info for you to look at, too.

                  Hi Roma

The reason that you have not found the original of MJD's note, is that it hasn't survived - or at least, hasn't been discovered.

                      Hi Roma

No worries. It would be wonderful if the original inquest material could one day be discovered, but my hopes of that are slim.

                        Celeste,
Ok forgive me for being blonde today. What links? Or rather what section do I find the links? By the way THANK YOU very much, both you and Sam. I appreciate it. I'm not real savy with this website still - especially after the crash.

You'll find a selection of maps in the "Victorian London" section (see side-bar on left of screen), under "Whitechapel". Happy browsing

                            Hi Sam

Could you be so kind as to tell me where the police station was in Bishopgate Street, that is the one where Kate Eddowes was dumped shortly after her arrest. I've scanned that map of Whitechapel but can not find it.

It's there - just track Bishopsgate Street a little north of Liverpool Street Station, and it's on the opposite side of the road. I've circled the Police Station in red below:
