I imagine it's the same bricks underneath, repointed etc.

The bricks almost certainly (beyond a few damaged ones) would be re-used. Even in the States, with our mania for knocking down old buildings and putting up new, it's standard practice to salvage the bricks and re-use them in new construction. They just don't wear out, it's economical, plus old weathered bricks have a visual appeal that new ones do not.
Here, you've got a building that already has all the bricks it needs already in place. Why swap them out?- Ginger
