I think the board school in Durward St either is being or has been turned into flats.

Yes it has and I have periodically found listings for it. There don't seem to be any available right now but I will keep trolling the Whitechapel real estate sites and see if one pops up.

I have also found listings for the flats built over what was Winthrop Street and along Buck's Row (Durward Street). There's one section of that development which is right where New Cottage was and just next to the Polly Nichols murder site.

Well I'm not saying the houses were identical inside and out by the time of the Ripper, but I don't think that Dorset Street was always 'the worst street in London'. I was under the impression that both buildings were originally built around the same time as townhouses, to accommodate the influx of Huguenot silk weavers. When the silk trade moved elsewhere no.26 (along with many others) was converted to single-room occupancy, and the garden into a row of cottages. But the one in Fournier Street seems to have remained as a family home. So apples and apples, at least originally, but the worm of urban decay ate away the core of one.

I stayed in this Landmark Trust property in Princelet Street last year. The layout of the hallway leading through to the yard looks quite similar to that of 29, Hanbury Street (it backs on to properties in Hanbury Street).

Having looked vicariously at several of the early 18th century buildings remaining in the area around the Ten Bells, I can say that there is a definite pattern to how their interiors are configured...at least until the modern developers come in and start mucking about.

I did find an older listing for a flat in the old Board School. It's no longer active and the pictures are kind of fuzzed out but you can still see what it looks like. Amusingly, the old rooftop recreation ground that the children used to play in is now a communal deck/lounge area. Somethings apparently don't change.
