This is getting rather like a seance, isn't it?

I seem to remember a dispute around another subject at the time not related to Anderson. But my memory is again hazy. P

It is indeed--- but so far no reply,Chris.
PSST! IS THERE ANYBODY THERE ? Pirate Jack? Paul? Martin ?

        • Jeff

Well, the fact that I had had another disagreement with Martin Fido, about a different subject, would hardly amount to my holding a "grudge" against him, would it?

Does the fact that you've had a disagreement with Stewart on this thread mean you now hold a "grudge" against him?

Hist! I seem to hear a message coming through, Nats:

            Kind regards, Sam Flynn

            • Personally I view a bun fight like this as deconstructive, rather than reconstructive... I mean demolition never builds nothing.
A few pencil marks in a margin from someone who didn't know his arse from his elbow anyway, doesn't seem to make much difference to the fact that if any of these senior police officers really knew who Jack was in 1888, or even two years later, they would have arrested him, and charged him.
That is unless he was related to one of the stuck up shits.
Then they had a problem on their hands.

                    Hi Chris

I thought you had had another disagreement with Martin. I’ve been trying to rack my poor old brain all night but it wont come to me. Actually I’ve never met Martin Fido but would love to do so given the reputation he has. Would just love to do a Martin Ripper walk, sink a beer and discuss David Cohen. He is by all accounts quite a character.

I’ve had a disagreement with Stewart on a number of threads, I’ve also agreed with him on others. I think you have me wrong if you think I would hold a grudge against anyone who had different views to me in the Ripper community. On that basis I wouldn’t talk to anyone. To prove the point I intend to work editing Stewarts lecture all day, as the slides have just arrived, and get it off to Adam. I promise to work as a fan, which I certainly am.

Nats, I’ve been as clear and honest as I can, I’m simply not and have never been a spokesman for Paul Begg. However he is a friend and neighbour and I will probably have coffee with him this week. I still have the instructions for his Dish Washer. But my views differ from Paul’s, Martin’s, Stewart’s and yours.

If I can just pull this thread back on topic. I did ask a question about Dr Davies report.

Does anyone know if that report is ever likely to be published in Full? And If not why?

                    Pirate

                    • "I’ve been as clear and honest as I can..."

I've enjoyed the cut and thrust as much as anyone. But Cap'n, that statement!

My impression is that your stock in trade is obfuscation, deliberate overstatement (often later revised), and when all else fails, a little personal sneer???

Do try and make yourself clear Sushka, are you addressing the Cap'n or the Pirate? either way the word hypocrite comes to mind.

                        • Oh What A lovely Thread!

I would have to say this has been one of the most successful threads I've encountered on Casebook in a long time.
Congratulations to Stewart, Ally and Chris and of course the endlessly curious journalist Pirate Jack. And Natalie, Paul Begg and Nothing To See.
I think Stewart letting go with both barrels with the Harry Cox and Edmund Reid quotes was pure gold.
Ally's apposite quote from "The Wizard Of Oz" ("Take no notice of the man behind the curtain") was also spot-on.
I had never realised Chris' wonderful forensic ability (demonstrated in his in his questioning of Pirate Jack).Wonderful.
I must add that I really enjoy Martin Fido, Paul Begg's and Keith Skinner's writings.
To A Man On A Galloping Horse this post will be a clear demonstration of my bias. In fact, it is merely a summation of my feelings at this juncture.
I think it was the lesser known Sydney poet, Bastian Sleffur who said:
"Universities are for the learned, not the wise".

Thanks to all participants on this thread.
Oh, and lastly, a question (as Columbo used to say):
Is it possible for the seriously interested researchers of the Swanson Marginalia to go to the museum where the subject book is deposited
and examine it for themselves? Rather than endlessly consider the seemingly unobtainable Dr Davies report? JOHN RUFFELS.

                          • To my knowledge the Black Museum is still not open to the general public. However if you are doing research or writing a book you could try writing to the curator.

However it wasn’t released to the recent exhibition at London docklands, which I found most surprising.

Congratulations, I must confess being surprised that your poor half witted talons were up to the task. It is clear however that you cannot discern between sneering and something we call here in England ‘ironic humour’.

Perhaps a little more practice in the training pool might be advised?
