    researchers

    Hello Phil. Thanks.

"am I mistaken when I presume that the memoirs have never been seen in full?"

I think that a couple of ripper researchers have seen them in toto.

    Cheers.

      Hello Lynn,

Thanks for the reply...Do you know of any particular reason, or does anyone for that matter..why these memoirs cannot be perused over by the general Ripperological public?

      best wishes

            Hi all,

According to Monro family tradition, there are two memoirs, the one that doesn't mention the Ripper (or other high profile cases), and was apparently intended for public consumption...and a second memoir intended for the family and 'insiders', which contained all of Monro's secrets regarding the Ripper, Cleveland Street, and who knows what else. The former memoir certainly exists and copies are in the hands of Keith Skinner, and I would wager one or two other Ripper researchers. The latter memoir is probably apocryphal, but oh what a read it would make if it actually existed!

            Yours truly,

            Tom Wescott

                Darjeeling letter

Hello Tom. Is the "Darjeeling letter" in the first or second group? That was gone over for information, but revealed little about "JTR."

If, however, there is information not previously seen . . .

                Cheers.

                  Hello Lynn,

Exactly. The political in's and out's, the who's done the "right thing" and who's done the "wrong thing" in the eyes of the politicians, is a very interesting scenario. Not to mention influence.

                  best wishes

                    divergent

                    Hello Phil. Thanks.

Yes, and there seem to be divergent explanations of events in Monro's writings.

                    Cheers.

                      Hello Lynn,

                      Thanks for the reply..

Yes, another reason that may or may not reveal clarity if we can see the complete memoirs. I hope the family have nothing against it, and like Simon Wood and I have suggested, a new piece from Adam Wood, Keith Skinner etc in conjunction with the family would be a great plus for Ripperology through Ripperologist.

With the History of the Swanson Marginalia, a new high standard has been set. A Monro edition would certainly continue that trend.

                      best wishes

                        Hello Phil. Thanks.

I daresay a printed version would generate sales. Added incentive.

                        Cheers.

                          Hello Lynn,

                          Thanks.

I can see that happening as well.

I wonder if we can get some sort of feedback from others who know a little more than we do, re the Monro memoirs? It would be appreciated, I'm sure.

                          best wishes

Perhaps Adam Wood could get into contact with Keith Skinner and propose the above to the family, a la Swanson Marginalia history?

                              Hi Phil,

I've had a brief chat with Keith about this and he agrees the publication of Monro's memoirs would be a very good idea.

                              Watch this space.
