  • Bramshill Police Training College

    Hello all,

I wonder if any person with better knowledge of such things can help me with a few questions re. Bramshill Police Traiing College? Thank you.

As some of you may know, it was sold last May for approx. £25million, as upkeep of the place was no longer feasable because of high costs.

The JtR connection to this fantastic Jacobean building, situated in unbelievable surroundings, is the College Museum. This is where the well known Abberline walking stick was displayed in a cabinet, donated by Ian Pirnie, Rear Admiral, son of ex-policeman Hugh Pirnie in 1974.

The questions I have are the following. Because of said sale..

What happened to the exhibits at the Bramshill Museum?
Where were the items transferred to?
Especially..where is the Abberline Walking Stick now?

I am sure there are many who would be interested to learn these things. It would be a shame if yet another Ripper related item suddenly became "lost" would it not?

Thank you one and all for any help on this one. I am sure with the resources available here on Casebook, with so many interested in police history etc, and many current or ex-policemen as members..it would interest many, and there must be a good chance that someone knows the answers to these honest and straightforward questions. :-)

    regards

Some items were sold, some items were not, with Abberlines stick falling into the latter.

As for where they are being stored, I do believe that is yet to be ascertained, well was last time I heard a few months back.

I suspect, and I stress this is merely my own thoughts, the items shall either go to the new Scotland Yard premises on the Embankment (with the crime museum), or, more likely as its not a crime related item, kept at the Metropolitan Police Heritage Centre at West Brompton (or in their storage).

Thank you Monty for this most useful information.

The place in West Brompton is just down the road from Stamford Bridge I believe. Do they accept visitors, non force related do you happen to know?

And one more thing. Would you be so kind as to update us on the eventual place of safe keeping for the walking stick please?.. Thank you :-)

        Hello Monty,

Am answering my own questions here its old age..lol... found it out..

Looks like a super day out :-)

It is just past Brompton Cemetery and turn left into Lillie Road if walking from Stamford Bridge. If coming from West Brompton station..its about 3 mins quicker to walk..easy to find too.

          Yes Phil,

Anyone can visit the Heritage centre. Its open to the public, just press the buzzer and either Neil Patterson or Phillp Barnes-Warden shall let you in. Its tiny, only a 20 min visit if that, but worth it.

I've made inquiries with the Mike at the Met Police History Society. He state the Truncheon collection is being retained at Bramshill house, whereas the rest of the collection, including Abberlines walking stick, is being held at the Mets new Training College Library in Sunningdale Park, Berks.

            Hello Monty,

now that IS good news. ☺ the worst thing would have been if it had just disappeared over time.

Thank you for your efforts in tracking it down. Most appreciated. I would imagine there are quite a few things of interest at Sunningdale too.
Perhaps before my next visit I might be able to politely ask for an appointment to view the collections in the library. .If they allow invited members of the public of course by pre arrangement. That would interest me greatly..

            Once again. Thank you.
