  • Police Orders 31st October 1888

Does anyone happen to have access to the Police Orders for the 31st October 1888?

    T279 to H485 PC 73813 [3rd Class] George M. Ide

I'm current researching PC 73828 Samuel KNOWLES who joined in the 23rd July 1888 and was originally posted to T Division as 136T but who was transferred to J Division on the 31st October 1888 as 105J.

Am curious to know whether he was posted as an individual or whether he was part of a group like those sent to H Division?

I know Samuel was posted to Bethnal Green Police Station and remained there till at least 1901.

Would any of the PCs transferred in to patrol the streets of Whitechapel during the Autumn of terror have changed their collar number, or retained their original? I can only think of Alfred Long, offhand, who was drafted in from A Division to patrol H Division territory but kept his number 254A.

My understanding was that chaps like Long, Wensley & Scholes would have just kept their own Divisional numbers and letters, whereas the chaps listed above and KNOWLES had been physically transferred to H & J Divisions and not seconded so where given new numbers.
