  • Help with tracking a Whitechapel Detective

    Hi,

I am researching a Metropolitan Policeman who served from 1887-1912, all of his career being on H Division, and from 1894 he was a Detective on Whitechapel CID.
I have found him on all census results, and in 1891 he is shown resident at Commercial Street Police Station. I have recently been trying to follow him on the London electoral rolls, but only have him on those between 1893-1896. He is still at Commercial St Station from 1893-1895, then in 1896 he is shown resident at 74 Leman Street (Dwelling house) was that a Police Section House does anyone know? I know he was made up to Detective Constable on 08/10/1894.
Has anyone seen the London Electoral rolls for either Commercial Street or Leman Street Police Stations for any of the years he served, that I have not found ie: 1887-1893 and 1897-1912?? (Although I know he married in 1898 and they rented a private dwelling in Mile End Old Town)

    Many thanks for any help,

    Jon

    Hi Jon,

74 Leman Street is indeed the Police Station and yes, it held a section house as did Commercial Street and Bishopsgate for the City force.

Thanks for confirming that Monty, other research shows the Station was 76 Leman Street, did it span more than one building, or was 74 the Section House do you think?

        Jon,

Yeah it ran two buildings as it were.

I've some MEPO docs on Leman Street somewhere I link. Let me look through my stuff when I get home later.

The private dwelling in Mile End may have been force owned. Families rented these from the Met. Not all mind.

Have you obtained his service record? I ask out of curiosity.

Thanks very much, so far I have a copy of his 2 pages in the pension book, and someone from the Gentleman's Military Interest Club kindly checked him on their copies of Police Orders, and found when he joined CID.
Is there anyway of obtaining a copy of his full Police Service Record? or is it just a case of putting together the joining register, pension book and Police Orders?
He and his wife lived at 20 Walden Street, Mile End Old Town, Stepney from 1898 until he retired in July 1912, which I believe back then was just inside the City.
I love the fact he served all his career in Whitechapel, and would have been at Commercial Street during the Ripper Murders. Also in 1901 he was highly commended at the Old Bailey whilst working as a Detective alongside D.Insp Wensley and D.Sgt Leeson, so I have a gut feeling he would have possible been stood alongside them at the Sidney Street Siege, when Wensley knocked on the door and Leeson was shot..

Ah Mervyn and his mates at GMIC are a great help for those who are searching.

I suggest you contact the Friends of the Metropolitan Police and ask for their help. If you pass on as much info as you can (collar no, warrant no, rank etc) they may be able to obtain his records should they have copies. Or, alternatively, check out the National Archives.

If you wish, you can PM me his collar No (should you have it). I may be able to pin a photo of him.

            Only if you wish mind.

He would have seen a lot of Ripper related action at Commercial St, as many suspects were taken there for interrogation.

His collar number when he joined was 445H, but in Police Orders when he was made up to Detective he was re-numbered as 135H for some reason?

                Hi Jon,

Collar numbers change, either due to promotion or restructure mainly.

Let me have a look see on what I have.

                Will get back to you.

                Cheers
