  • H-Division in 1837

    Hi everyone

I've been doing some research into my ancestors from London and recently discovered one who was a bit naughty, a William Platt (my great x5 grandfather), sentenced for larceny at the Old Bailey in September 1837, he stole some cotton from a shop on Shoreditch High Street. The 'arresting officer' was a Constable John Brooks H64.

I have discovered that the H division was Stepney, but also Whitechapel which of course is connected with the Ripper case.

Can anyone shed any light how I could find out more about H-Division and any possible information on Constable Brooks?

    Thanks

    Hi Sarah,

    Interesting.

The Met police museum may be able to help here. They may hold his warrent number which is the key to police research.

I shall have a trawl through my records for him, see what I have. However looking at the date I may not hold anything significant.

      Appreciate the help Monty.

I know the date is quite early compared to the 1880's of the Ripper case, and from what little I know, policing was still in its infancy in the 1830's.

Should you come across anything of use, I would be grateful if you could share it with me.

In the meantime, I shall continue to trawl the net for information!
