  • A Work-Life History of Policemen in Victorian and Edwardian England

    Hello all,

    I found this interesting piece..

A Work-Life History of Policemen in Victorian and Edwardian
England by Haia Shpayer-Makov of the University of Haifa, Israel.

There are some very interesting points and observations. 43 references makes the paper well substantiated.

Recommend view and discuss. I do not believe this has been posted before. Apologies if it has.

    Hi Phil,

Interesting read. It helps put into perspective the promotions and rate of promotions of those involved in the Whitechapel murders investigation who eventually achieve the rank of chief inspector.

I was also intrigued by the author commenting upon the Metropolitan Police and its relation to State affairs.

    Sincerely,

    Mike

      Hello Mike,

Yes, those two things caught my eye as well. The promotions part from MEPO 4 is very interesting indeed. The "5 year a constable" yardstick took me by surprise too.

I get the impression the Met Police became more and more a force aside from State affairs, and assumed (perhaps the word is wrong, so I will bend if seen that way) a separate power within the state. The Vigilance of the State, infact, to quote Bernard Porter.

        Hello all,

In addition, Paul Begg has kindly mentioned on the jtrforums site that there is also another piece by the same author called The Ascent of the Detective by Haia Shpayer-Makov, published on 29 September 2011 by Oxford University Press at £30! According to Paul, who has a copy, a very good but academic work. It came out 4 days ago.
Many thanks Paul for bringing this to our attention.
