  • Edwin Brough: Photos of Scalby Manor and yard

    Hi,

As some of you are aware, I managed to gain access to Burgho and Barnabys home of Scalby Manor, Scarborough.

I was surprised to find the majority of the yard still as was when their owner, Edwin Brough, lived there.

Here are a few shots I took.

    The kennels themselves

    Hi,

These shots are of the actual kennels themselves. Some outside looking in and some from inside.

    Cheers

Oh, these are excellent photos, Monty. It wouldn't have occurred to me that the place still existed. What made you go looking for it? The main building looks like it's a pub now. That right?

        Hi Grave,

I have been going to Scarborough, on and off for my hols, for about 30 years now, since I was a child. And have driven by the Manor many times though, because of its location, not really had a good view.

Last year my Dad suggested it as a place to eat (its now a Pub/Carvery) and as I parked up the building seemed familiar. It wasnt till I was halfway through my meal that I realised the name 'Scalby Manor' meant something and the reason I recognised the building was from an image I have off Brough outside it. Unfortuantely I didnt have the time to inspect thouroughly so I decided to come back the next year and investigate....which I did.

The Manors upstairs has not altered since Broughs day apperntly however I was denied access to that part. That said, I am working on it.

          Hi Monty!

See, this is what a Swede simply has to envy - of course, I can always go to Stora Tumlehed, but since Stride was not one of Jack´s, what is the use ...?

That picture of the lamp and the initials and dating really sends you back to when the game was afoot! Thanks for sharing!

          The best,
          Fisherman

            Hello Fisherman,

I thought of doing exactly that next week actually, if I can manage to find a day..

Monty, congratulations once more on yet another fine venture out with your camera! Excellent photos!

            best wishes

              Hi Phil!

Sounds like a nice day out! Will you need to travel far? I notice that you are based in Norway. Myself, I would cover the stretch in two and a half hours, travelling by car, so I really don´t have much of an excuse for not going there. Sometime, maybe ...!

              The best,
              Fisherman

                Hello Fisherman,
I'd take the ferry over to Strømstad, and make my way from there I suppose. If you are based in Gothenburg, we could arrange a meet up?

                best wishes

                  Hi Phil!

"If you are based in Gothenburg, we could arrange a meet up?"

I´m living in Helsingborg, actually, and that is some 230 kilometres to the south of Gothenburg, so I´m afraid I will find it hard to find the time to go to Stora Tumlehed. Also, I am working the upcoming week, and so I´m pretty tied up. The week after that, I´m up for a weeks vacation, so it seems we´re slightly unsynchronized.
I take it your journey takes you no further south than Gothenburg, but if I´m wrong, let me know! And at any rate, have a good journey and a pleasant stay in Sweden!

                  The best,
                  Fisherman
