The problem with CID officers Scott is the lack of collar numbers.

All we have is the physical descriptions of the officers when they joined and left. And believe me,as Rob will testify, those description could cover up to 8 men in that black and white photo.

and those two guys sitting on either side of Superintendent Foster should be identified. I don't think one is Superintendent McWilliam. Or one could be the 41 year-old Inspector Edward Collard. But which one?

Yes, very good work gents. Now can somebody tackle the rest of the photo - specifically the two heavy-set gentlemen in civilian clothing sitting in chairs at the end? ...Likely the Divisional Surgeons of the City Force.

I would like to say that facially, I should say that the man depicted, who appears to show somewhat of a twinkle in his eye, might seem to fit the personality of the man that we know as "The Police Poet" as discussed in your excellent article in the current issue of Ripperologist. Good work by you and Neil on further illuminating the lives of the various policemen involved in the case. Bravo. Fine work by Stewart in helping you to identify this man as P.C. George H. Hutt.

The identity really was based on his collar number, and Harvey.

This photo is taken from the 1887 Snow Hill Group Photo, in which Stewart and Don identified Harvey, not Hutt.

Now Harveys collar number is as was in 1888, so its logical to assume Hutt had not changed his number also.

Below is a picture of Hutt with the collar number highlighted.

I understand exactly what you are saying, which I knew already from your article, though I gather you need to clarify this for others on the forum. Still, as I put it in my last post in this thread, the character shown in that face is consistent, to my mind, with what I perceive to be the type of person I would expect P.C. Hutt to be based on his writings.

The identity really was based on his collar number, and Harvey.

This photo is taken from the 1887 Snow Hill Group Photo, in which Stewart and Don identified Harvey, not Hutt.

Now Harveys collar number is as was in 1888, so its logical to assume Hutt had not changed his number also.

Below is a picture of Hutt with the collar number highlighted.

Just to clarify, PC Harvey was identified by Stewart Evans and Don Rumbelow and announced in their book Scotland Yard Investigates.

Nothing to do with Rob and I.
